Hot Pink Party: tonight

•10/16/2010 • Leave a Comment

Don't be shy.

BurlyCon’s workshops, panels, and general burlesque bonding continue today, culminating in a party for attendees and the general public tonight. Seattle’s bellydancing dynamo Fuchsia FoXXX hosts the Hot Pink Party at Cirque Event Center. The only BurlyCon event open to non-attendees, the party is a chance to tear up the dance floor and hobnob with burlesque performers from around the world. The DJ lineup includes Ramiro (Uniting Souls), Nark (Fringe, Lip Service), and Michael Holden (Seattle Erotic Art Festival). Party-goers are encouraged to wear pink or “flirt with someone wearing pink”. It might be the highest concentration of burlesque starlets in one place since Dita Von Teese last came to town. Which means you should go.

Tickets are $15, available in advance at www.burlyconseattle.com or at the door. This event is 21+ only. Cirque Event Center is located at 131 Taylor Avenue in Seattle.

How much is that Kitten in the window?

Today I heard a rumor some of my favorite Seattle burlesque ladies would be dancing in a window for a special appearance by designer Betsey Johnson at her downtown boutique. I darted out at lunchtime, and lo and behold- it’s true. The party is still happening now- if you hurry over to 5th Ave you might catch a peep.

The big wheel of Burlycon- the annual conference for burlesque performers, fans, and aficionados- has started to turn, with every successive year picking up steam and circumference like a beautiful burlesque Katamari. (Scantily clad legs, feather fans, notebook-wielding aerialists, and sex work educators quivering and flailing as the conference rolls on).

Amusing visual images aside, the 2010 Curators- Miss Indigo Blue (Headmistress of the Academy of Burlesque in Seattle) and Jo Boobs (Headmistress of The New York School of Burlesque)- have lined up a hefty agenda of workshops and panels for aspiring artists and those that seek a little guidance and self-improvement in the business. Unlike other national events, there is no contest or pageant- the purpose of the conference is education and community.

Well-known jetsetters will be out in full force: recent Baltimore-to-NYC transplants Trixie Little & The Evil Hate Monkey give feedback and advice on being present in performance, Jonny Porkpie (co-creator/producer of NYC’s Pinchbottom Burlesque) teams up with Heidi Von Haught on “Humor for Ecdysiasts”, and Exotic World title winner Kristina Nekyia teaches “Get Bent! Circus-Style Flexibilty”. Michelle L’amour, Franky Vivid, Tigger!, Catherine d’Lish, Pyra Sutra, and The World Famous *BOB* also share nuggets of wisdom. Living legend Dee Milo will co-host a panel on “The Allure Of Vintage”, and for lighter fare, Monk and SEAF’s Clayton Hibbert will school the masses on “Stage Combat”.

Seattle and Portland troupes represent the Northwest, taking turns in the trenches of the hospitality area. Attendees might be so lucky as to be served punch by Stripped Screw, nibble a finger sandwich with Sinner Saint, or get a little old-fashioned charm from Rose City Shimmy (PDX) or Gorelesque Girls.

My pick for best class title? “Performance Art Burlesque: or, What Did She Just Pull Out of Her Pussy?” (Friday afternoon with Darlinda Just Darlinda)

Burlycon takes place October 14-17 in Seattle. For all things Burlycon, including a printable schedule, visit this BURLYCON 2010 link

Alotta Boutté at Burlycon (plus a casting call…)

Alotta Boutté

One of the founding members of Harlem Shake Burlesque, legendary San Francisco chanteuse Alotta Boutté has tap danced and burlesqued her way around the world- most notably at the acclaimed Hubba Hubba Review, Margaret Cho’s The Sensuous Woman, Tease-O-Rama, and Exotic World. We’re extremely lucky to have her all to ourselves at Burlycon this year where she will teach “Sing & Strip”.

Here’s a link to an extremely cool interview with Alotta from a few years back…

What I Saw At NBR

Recently I had the pleasure of chatting with the organizers of Naked Girls Reading about their one-night affair with Naked Boys…Reading. Though there are no plans for a second installment, the response was extremely positive, as one might guess.

I also spoke to a few of the readers to ascertain their feelings regarding the all-male literary debut. Although what footwear best complements a birthday suit was high on the list of points to consider, Monk (aka Twisted Monk, maker of the finest hemp bondage rope on earth) confessed that nakedness and accessories weren’t actually the most nerve-wracking parts of the equation. “I think the hardest part really was narrowing it down to three readings and then finding just the right passages to convey why this particular book is meaningful to you,” he said. “To share a book is to share an idea, an idea that holds personal meaning. Framing that, expressing that in public…now that is more scary than being naked in front of a large audience.”

Monk and fellow readers were in all honesty, a treat to listen to (and to look at, of course). Get the juicy details in my Stranger review HERE. And while you’re at it, check out Monk’s rope making talents HERE and in the side bar at right.
