Friday, January 25

This week’s top pick can be filed under the category “it was only a matter of time”. An Evening at Merlotte’s: Burlesque Inspired by True Blood will take place Friday, January 25 at the Highway 99 Blues Club. One could get a little dizzy pondering the myriad ways the hit show might be re-purposed… the unholy couplings that might transpire… gratuitous sex and supernatural violence involving beautiful trashy people that look perpetually humidified… all we can say is the Highway 99 Blues Club better prepare for some bloodletting, and then some.

As for our other, most honorable of mentions of the week- here’s the roundup:

Thursday, January 24

Sinner Saint Burlesque debuts much-anticipated experimental show Long Kiss Goodnight this Thursday at Noc Noc. With this run the troupe intends to take their sweet, sweet time- allowing the audience to luxuriate in a slower form of striptease harkening back to the days when top peelers routinely performed acts which clocked in around 20 minutes. Burlesque in this format had a way of lending an air of intimacy and anticipation to a performance that some argue has been lost in our grab-n-go culture. Will Sinner Saint’s modern twist on a vintage format keep the savages at Noc Noc slack-jawed with rapt attention? You’ll just have to show up and see.

Long Kiss Goodnight guest stars Cherry Manhattan (who we hear wrote the narrative bits as well) and features Sinner Saint’s Jesse Belle-Jones, Polly Wood, Evilyn Sin Claire, Lady Tatas, and Doña Dei Cuori. Sinner Saint Burlesque performs each and every Thursday at the Noc Noc: 1516 2nd Avenue (downtown Seattle between Pike and Pine). Doors 9pm, show 9:30 every Thursday (happy hour ends at 9pm). To reserve seats, email info@sinnersaintburlesque.com

Saturday, January 26

Catch a double feature with a quick change between early and late burlesque shows:

Return to WinterWood takes place at 6:30pm at Re-bar, and features some stellar performers with a dark side. “The woods are as dangerous as they are beautiful” says the event summary, and we don’t doubt it one bit with otherworldly performers such as La Petite Mort, Olatsa Assin, Tamara the Trapeze Lady, and The Luminous Pariah. For tickets, click HERE.

More the Merrier: An Alumni Spectacular over at West Hall (Oddfellows Building) begins at 9pm, also Saturday night. Daring duets, gargantuan groups, and mouth-watering multiples are the name of the game with this curated bunch of Academy alumni. The show is hosted by Gams Galore and features very special guest star Sydni Deveraux. Get tickets, lineup, and more information by clicking HERE.

Last, we give you a sneak peek/early warning for a March 1 show you won’t want to miss featuring heaps and heaps of silky smooth manflesh- tickets go on sale at noon tomorrow (January 22) for Boys! Bois! Boyz!, which will star very special guest Jett Adore of Chicago’s legendary Stage Door Johnnies.

Finally, apropos of nothing except my editorial whims… we give a tiny nod to visiting flashy pop-showgirl Lady Gaga, who gave good show at the hideous Tacoma Dome last week. If anyone’s music can make that death trap/tin can venue sound good, it’s Gaga. Plus, she of course had costumes and sets that would make most burlesquers drool. (Meat sofa, anyone? I kept thinking Wiggy Stardust was about to commandeer the stage). Check out these pix, and read my “off topic” review in the current issue of Seattle Gay News if you’re so inclined. Heavy Metal Lover, indeed. Have a great week, everyone.

“Honestly, I’ve never felt as welcomed and cared for as I do in the burlesque community.”
~ Dr. Jen, Atomic Cosmetics

There are many fascinating and interesting people in the world of burlesque, and I always enjoy hearing their personal histories and about how burlesque manifested itself in their lives. I’m not just talking about performers- there are producers, costumers, photographers (ahem) and even…doctors. In this case I’m talking about Dr. Jennifer Dietrich, who earned that distinction by earning a PhD in Biochemistry/Biophysics from the University of Kansas in 2004. So how did this particular doctor become “Dr. Bad Jen”, supplying Seattle’s burlesque community with healthy and safe skincare and makeup through Atomic Cosmetics/Xerion Skin Science?

Like a lot of people involved in the burlesque community, it was by purely by chance that she ended up becoming a darling of the Seattle burlesque world. Six years ago Dr. Jen stumbled across the EWG (Environmental Working Group) website. In particular, she came across the site’s cosmetics database listing the hazardous levels of ingredients contained in various products on the market and realized many of the products that she used had a bad safety rating. “I was horrified to learn that they got a 7 or higher on the hazard scale,” she said. “I immediately threw everything in my bathroom away in a panic. Of course, then I had no choice but to roll up my sleeves and get busy with some emulsion chemistry.”

Since Dr. Jen is all about science, taking the next step was quite easy. “I really just needed to do a bit of research, and then I was good. I did have to purchase things to get started, but it was worth it to me to have non-toxic skincare. I never thought of selling my stuff at all, but then people kept commenting on my skin and how great it looked, and asking me for the products I was using.”

While slowly discovering she was becoming a makeup maven, Dr. Jen moved to Seattle and caught her first burlesque show. Like many before her, she had no idea what burlesque was and fell in love with the art form immediately. “I love the creativity, the theatricality, the DIY attitude, and most of all, the rhinestones!” (She’s not kidding about the rhinestones. Just head over to her space inside Retail Therapy- on Capitol Hill near the corner of Pike & Broadway- and you’ll see; she’s currently on a rhinestoning frenzy over there).

Dr. Jen became adamant (and still is) about letting people know how toxic makeup can be, especially for performers sweating under hot lights in heavy drag on a regular basis. “Stage makeup is some of the worst stuff out there as far as toxicity goes.” Since she opened up her store in August 2012 she has been very busy, which she attributes to the fact that people, not just performers, want healthier alternatives. “This makes me super happy, because when I started doing this, nobody listened to me when I talked about how dangerous the products in the world were.”

Seattle burlesque performer Inga Ingénue (Miss Viva Las Vegas 2011) was first introduced to Atomic Cosmetics when Dr. Jen was simply an online presence a few years ago; now Inga is one of her biggest fans. “I have incredibly sensitive skin; artificial fragrances and harsh chemicals make my face very, very unhappy,” Inga told me. “Meeting Dr. Jen was like a dream come true! It’s pretty common knowledge that toxins, preservatives, and added mystery fragrances are just plain bad for your longterm health, and should be avoided as much as possible anyway; I want to stay healthy and perform until the day I die!”

“Dr. Jen is brilliant and smokin’ hot- I am SO lucky to know her and have access to her amazing work,” Inga continued. “I wander into her lovely Capitol Hill shop all the time to chat, eat gluten-free cookies, and name lipstick colors. ‘Ingénude’ is my personal favorite, of course.”

With a rising demand amongst showgirls (showboys, too), I asked Dr. Jen how she goes about making new products. “It’s quite a process! First I decide what I want the product to do for the skin. Once I’ve established that, I research. I determine which oils will work best for what I want, then I look for actives that actually have some science behind them. This is critical- there are so many things on the market right now being touted as the next big thing in skincare, and in reality, there isn’t a shred of science to support those claims. Once I know what oils and actives I want to use, I decide what the best way to deliver those actives will be (i.e. in a cream, a serum, etc). From there, it’s just emulsion chemistry. Once I make a product, I test it on myself, and if it works on me, I send it off for safety and stability testing, and then it goes to my small army of showgirl guinea pigs. Because, you know, ‘tested on showgirls, never on animals’.”

Did I mention she gives a 25% discount to burlesque and drag performers at her store?

The current popularity of Atomic Cosmetics doesn’t mean Dr. Jen has abandoned her other scientific endeavors. She’s been in the science field for 16 years now and has a bachelor’s degree in Pathogenic Microbiology in addition to her PhD. As Dr. Jen puts it, “…It is mostly due to the fact that I love science like a bad boyfriend…no matter how badly it treats me, I just…can’t…quit….it.”

I asked her to explain a few of the scientific projects she is currently working on that are near and dear to her heart. “I have another company that I formed in order to pursue research on two main projects. One is an early Alzheimer’s detection assay. The goal with this assay is to provide people with a reliable, early detection assay. Currently, there is no lab test that can be done to determine whether a person has the disease; diagnosis is based on some kind of voodoo done by MDs, and can only be confirmed post-mortem. I would really like to figure this out before I get much older- I sure as heck don’t want some silly MD trying to diagnose me with nothing more than his opinion.”

“My other project is my favorite one. I’m working to blur the lines between computer and brain by building a processor out of neuronal spare parts. There is a thing in computation known as Moore’s Law, which states that the numbers of transistors on a chip will double every 18 months, and we’re rapidly getting to the point where that is simply not going to be possible anymore. At some point, the current paradigm of transistors on a silicon chip will no longer be useful. My idea is to harness the massively parallel processing power of the brain and blend it with the brute force computational ability of modern computers to create a much more powerful computational architecture. In English: I want to build the brain in a vat. Or if you prefer it in movie terms, I’m gonna be the person they travel back in time to kill.”

Yes, Dr. Jen is that brilliant- and funny as well. See for yourself if you visit her fabulous space in Retail Therapy (maybe you can even help her with those rhinestones). The space is a fun, pleasant, and very soothing place to be. Photos of many Seattle burlesquers line the walls- in full Dr. Jen makeup, of course. (Full disclosure- she even fed me key lime pie during our interview).

Dr. Jen told me her ultimate goal was to win the Nobel Prize in physics and bring three strippers to the award ceremony. Why three? “Because I have to have more strippers with me than the guy who won the Nobel for PCR,” she replied. Who knew the Nobels were so hip? Perhaps there’s a new gig all burlesquers should aspire to get to….start making those Nobel Prize pasties.

COVER-SHOT-484x643

Who says all the fun’s over now that the holidays are growing ever smaller in our collective rear-view mirror?

In case you haven’t noticed, our noble and lovely friend Holli-Mae Johnson over at 21st Century Burlesque has just dropped the first two installments of the annual “Burlesque Top 50” countdown. Thousands of votes were painstakingly tallied since November (the biggest voter turnout so far, according to Holli-Mae’s intro); the resulting top 50 positions give anyone remotely interested in burlesque a pretty spot-on outline of who we as a community love best, which performers turned it out over the past 12 months, whose style is the most influential, and which newcomers are ones to watch in the new year.

Seattle already has a strong showing in the countdown with 4 locals honored so far. Read all about Catherine D’Lish, Sydni Deveraux, Inga Ingénue, and Armitage Shanks over HERE, and check back in the coming days for the rest of the results. (Incidentally, we’re flattered that a phrase we once used to describe Armitage in this old Stranger review stuck with that talented, world-renowned emcee and found its way back into the blogosphere in 21st Century’s generous write up. “Honey-coated gravel”, indeed!)

While you’re visiting our kindred bloggers over at 21st Century, don’t forget to stop over HERE for the irresistibly glossy, 122 page special print edition that came out in 2012. It’s a keeper- and Dirty Martini’s radiant face and epic manicure are on the cover.  There’s no better way to bid adieu to 2012…

Fresh Meat, January 4 at the Rendezvous

Fresh Meat, January 4 at the Rendezvous

Burlesque Seattle Press has been enjoying a long and luxurious holiday season, and we sincerely hope that all you glittery people and fans of glittery people have been doing the same. Friday, January 4 Boom Boom L’Roux has revived Fresh Meat! A Performer Showcase. Experienced “celebrity panelists” will give feedback on the evening’s acts, and viewers are encouraged to jot down written notes to be used as constructive criticism on what they see. Behind the scenes at Land of the Sweets Part 2: a Q&A with Mafia Minx.

Who wouldn't take direction from Mafia Minx: Production Assistant/Front of House Manager for Land of the Sweets?

Who wouldn’t take direction from Mafia Minx, Production Assistant/Front of House Manager for Land of the Sweets?

Last week we chatted with Wardrobe Mistress Taffeta V. about life behind the wardrobe racks at Land of the Sweets. As the final week of this year’s holiday extravaganza begins, we bring you part two of our special feature: a Q&A with Mafia Minx. Now in her second year of dual roles as Production Assistant/Front of House Manager, Mafia very sweetly took a few moments to dish via email.

Jessica Price: How would you describe the “nuts and bolts” of your dual roles in Land of the Sweets…what does it entail throughout the run?

Mafia Minx: My job is to make sure that everything runs smooth in the front of the house. I deal with everything from comps to rhinestoning bra straps. We have a really solid crew and we work well as a team! This year I had the added benefit of being at rehearsals. The new finale is amazing!

Jessica: What is it like locking down the details on a series this lengthy, often with multiple shows per night? Are there a lot of surprises, or once you begin does it function like a well-oiled machine?

Mafia Minx: Before the run starts I am dealing with press comps, performers comps, and an abundance of other small tasks. It can be tedious but the hard work is done before we open. The cast and crew are a dream to work with. Everyone is working together to make sure we have a smooth run. We are a great team!

Jessica: Lily & Jasper are famously very involved in all the details of their baby, Land of the Sweets– but they also perform night after night. How much do you take over once the train has left the station, so to speak?

Mafia Minx: They really do a lot! I am constantly amazed at how hard they work. I take care of any issues that come up during the show, so they are able to focus on performing.

Jessica:What has been the most rewarding or interesting part of being behind the scenes?

Mafia Minx: I adore this show, so to be able to be a part of every aspect is really amazing. The most rewarding thing for me is to be able to watch the show so many times! It gets better and better every show!

Jessica: What’s your biggest nightmare?

Mafia Minx: I think the worst thing that could happen would be an injury to Lily or Jasper. This show wouldn’t happen without those two!

Jessica: How would you describe the arc of the mood backstage from the start of the series to the very last show?

Mafia Minx: In the beginning everyone is ready to get it started, mid run is where everyone gets a little tired. By the last show everyone is happy and a little sad thats its ending. Its so much fun to spend the holidays with all these glittery people!

Land of the Sweets: The Burlesque Nutcracker runs through December 27 at the Triple Door. Please visit http://thetripledoor.net/Calendar or www.landofthesweets.com for tickets and show times.
