Century High (Photo by Stephen Rusk)

When people who are clearly no longer in high school play the parts of people in high school, the results often present a challenge in classification. Sometimes the finished product is ridiculous (The Lonely Lady, Footloose, Dirty Dancing), sometimes beautiful (Romy and Michelle, Pretty In Pink, Dirty Dancing), and sometimes hilarious and campy (Grease, and um…Dirty Dancing).

Century High– featuring Seattle burlesque/cabaret regulars Ben DeLaCreme, Inga Ingenue, Ruby Mimosa, Waxie Moon, and Cherdonna & Lou- is billed as “a high-spirited camp comedy in the tradition of all dance movies ever”. Every member of the cast comes from a solid dance background, and every one of them is a full-fledged adult.

Here’s a synopsis, with photos:

Baby’s family has just moved to the small town of Oddfellow, a place where traditional values are held in high esteem and there is a ban on the one act that threatens to crumble them- dance! Century High is full of well-mannered students just trying to make the grade, but a few rebelious no-goodniks who refuse to stand still to the beat of everyone else’s drum have formed a rough and tumble dance gang -and they ain’t listenin’ to nobody, nohow! Being the new girl in school is always hard, but when Baby falls for a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, she must choose between her conservative upbringing and giving in to her own primal urges – to Lindy Hop, Salsa and Bachata the night away!

Century High runs through February 12. Get tickets HERE.

Speaking of school days… some of you may recall Sinner Saint’s Private Parts “Salon of Shame” style fundraiser last spring. Troupe regulars Evilyn Sin Claire and Polly Wood read from their real-life childhood journals, revealed pictures, drawings, and angst-y poems; producer Audrey McManus read letters to a schoolgirl crush. It was a truly memorable show and based on its success, the ladies of Sinner Saint are raising funds to perform a two week run of shows in London this March, only this time they’ll be doing kamikaze burlesque set to the readings.

Here’s what brings Sinner Saint to London, and how you can bring shame on yourself during Very Special Feelings:

Electric Burlesque is an exhibition of Greg Holloway’s photographs from live burlesque performances in Seattle. The stylized images are printed directly onto acrylic and crafted by hand into light boxes. This technique creates a three-dimensional effect giving the images up to three different appearances. The exhibition will be at The Sole Repair shop on Capitol Hill Feb 16-17; then moves to London in March accompanied by Sinner Saint Burlesque, who will perform a two week run in conjunction with the exhibition at London’s Brick House.

The ladies of Sinner Saint Burlesque will tantalize beloved friends and fans with kamikaze style improvised burlesque to shared selections! We’ll be moved by the moment…these will be acts NEVER done before and that will NEVER be done again…We’ll be acting out our childhood wisdom. That’s right; a mash up of Salon of Shame style readings, improvised interpretive dance, and…stripping! All at once! Want to join in the fun? Bring your own old poignant or embarrassing journals and join us for what’s bound to be a revealing evening! To add to the excitement, the evening will also feature a live auction of donated goods from artists and businesses around town, as well as crafted by our own SSB beauties.

Very Special Feelings: Friday February 4, Doors 7pm, Show 7:30pm

The Rebar: 1114 Howell Street Seattle, WA 98101
Advance Tickets: $15, $20 VIP table tickets
Advanced tickets at the Sinner Saint Burlesque Revue on Thursdays at Noc Noc (or through a performer)
Day Of: $20, $25 VIP tables

All That Jazz: Portland Burlesque “Flash Mob” Creators Inspired by BurlyCon 2010

•01/21/2011 • 1 Comment

-by Rayleen Courtney (Portland)

At 2pm on Saturday, January 15th at Oregon’s largest mall, droves of shoppers were delightfully taken aback when a group of burlesquers unleashed a special brand of unified fierceness by way of a Flash Mob.

The family friendly Flash Mob at Lloyd Center was choreographed by one of Portland burlesque’s leading ladies, Angelique DeVil. After Miss DeVil and a cohort took part in Dance Belt’s phenomenal Lady Gaga-themed Flash Mob in Seattle at BurlyCon 2010, they returned home inspired to create something similar in their own city. Upon their realization of this goal, ‘Beautiful Random Acts of Entertainment’ (or B-RAE) was born.

Says Angelique: “Our goal for our audience is to give them the gift of spontaneous entertainment, to break up the monotony of expectation and for them to experience what it would be like if musicals happened off-stage and in real life.”

Along with some participation from avid supporters of the burlycue community, B-RAE was ecstatic to have the following PDX burlesque performers take part: Russell Bruner, Pink Lady, Sophie Maltease, Karolina, Zora Phoenix, Mona DePlume, and The Infamous Nina Nightshade.

As it is not publicly known where or when B-RAE may strike with its sophomore project, Portlanders are advised to be on the look out!

Fred Opening Party Features Heavenly Spies, Can Can Castaways

Chris Snell, owner of Can Can Cabaret and excitable champion of the arts, has had a busy month. His trademark pink spex can be found peering out from just about every street corner downtown this month on the cover of Cty Arts…

Cover of City Arts, January 2011

…where he was chosen as #35 on a comprehensive list of arts community movers and shakers in Seattle. Or as City Arts calls it, “The Power List: 50 people who make Seattle arts go.” This definitely rings true for Chris, who in addition to opening the dance and cabaret hotspot that is Can Can, was an early supporter of performers from Ben DelaCreme to Fuchsia FoXXX to the Heavenly Spies, Vince Mira, and of course, current Can Can residents The Castaways. Later this month Can Can presents: Mod Carousel in Whirligig, a five person theatrical collective founded by The Luminous Pariah. Yes, Chris has done a lot for Seattle’s arts community and is quite vocal as a cheerleader for artists of all stripes.

Recently Chris put his money where his mouth is (again), launching a new space presented by Can Can: Fred Wildlife Refuge. Tonight’s their kickoff party, and The Heavenly Spies will perform along with The Castaways and multiple musical guests.

Here’s some detail from Fred’s press release:

Well, hello, Seattle art community! Fred wants to meet you – and wants you to meet each other!

Fred Wildlife Refuge is a privately run collaborative art center that includes a photo studio, the Fred Art Gallery, a performance/rehearsal studio for physical arts, a creative HQ on the Hill, a private event space and a refuge for Seattle’s most inventive/innovative artists so they can break away from their normal routine and venture into unlikely collaborations with artists of disciplines unlike their own. We hope Fred will provide a refuge for among (but not limited to) visual, music, dance, physical performance and literary artists, where they can enter into cross-genre partnerships that will strengthen Seattle’s already vibrants art scene.

The brainchild of the Can Can’s Chris Snell, Fred occupies the former Milkie Studio – home to legendary photographer Fred Milkie. Located in the heart of Capitol Hill, the re-imagined 5,200 square foot space will also be available as a prop/building shop for full-scale productions and will offer residencies to select local artists. Fred will continue the tradition of over 40 years’ worth of art creation while aiming to invigorate new life to art-goers/creators that can perpetually renew the support and appreciation of all art forms.

It is the mission of the gallery to challenge and revitalize the Seattle art community by providing a place to bridge exciting new ideas with inventive and unlikely collaborations.

Everything’s better in Texas: The 2011 Dallas Burlesque Festival

•01/18/2011 • 2 Comments

Roxie Moxie's Faust number

The 2011 festival circuit kicks off this weekend with The Dallas Burlesque Festival (January 21-22). I have a soft spot for burlesquers from my home state of Texas, and this year Coco Lectric (from Houston, residing in Austin) and Roxie Moxie (a Texas transplant, residing in Seattle) will be a part of the Saturday night showcase at House of Blues. Roxie will duet with Minetta Lane (Seattle) in their Faustian number performed previously with Stripped Screw. Being seduced by the devil into the ways of burlesque is a suitable theme for Texas peeling.

Roxie shared a few thoughts on returning to TX for the weekend:

I went to DBF last year with my Voodoo Chicken act, and they invited me back again this year to perform in the Saturday night showcase at House of Blues. So I thought hey – we should bring Faust! It’s one of my favorite acts, and I love duets (which are relatively rare in festivals). Plus it has fire. And everything is better when there’s fire.

I’m extremely excited to go back and perform in my hometown (well, I still claim Austin is REALLY my hometown, but I guess Dallas counts too). Last year was amazing, with crowds of over 500 people per night, and they’re expecting even bigger crowds this year. It should be a fabulous time – I can’t wait for Minetta and I to REPRESENT!

Seattle's Minetta Lane performs this weekend at DBF

Producer/performer and New York School of Burlesque instructor Darlinda Just Darlinda (NYC) will also perform Saturday. For a youtube trailer, tickets, and info on The Dallas Burlesque Festival, check out their website HERE

Photographer Kaylin Idora did a shoot with Coco Lectric in New Orleans a few days ago, and has generously shared this sizzling photo from an iconic New Orleans balcony:

A “postmodern” audition call; two Saturday night cabarets.

•01/14/2011 • Leave a Comment

Burlesque for a cause, this Saturday night.

This weekend, Jet City Burlesque presents a big, big lineup in an intimate setting. Bear-ly Naked Cabaret (hosted by “Miss Yum Yum Gimme Some”, Sydni Deveraux) will take over the Baltic Room on Saturday, January 15 in a benefit for PAWS. Lily Verlaine- back from other philanthropic endeavors in which she used her magnificent assets to gather donations for the Burlesque Hall of Fame- performs alongside belly dance queen Fuchsia FoXXX, Paris Original, and Iva Handfull. Belle Cozette is rumored to be reviving one of her first acts, and Hottie McNaughty and Pinky Shines will be on hand to raffle off prizes such as a three night stay at Roscoe’s Ranch (Best of Western Washington’s winning dog boarding facility) as well as a rhinestone necktie by Haute Under the Collar (Iva Handfull and Miss Elaine Yes’s glam-it-up shop). PAWS rehabilitated at least eight bear cubs last year- it costs an average of $70 per week just to feed them. Orphaned and injured wildlife need help just as much as homeless cats and dogs; Jet City Burlesque turns the focus to this aspect of PAWS with this weekend’s benefit. There’s nothing sexier than a big heart- go out and flaunt what you’ve got.

Read more about PAWS and pick up advance tickets HERE.

Late this Saturday night, The Swedish Housewife begins her triumvirate of Mezzo Lunatico productions housed by Teatro Zinzanni. Everything Paula touches turns to gold- I’d suggest double booking your Saturday night. For tickets and to see what Paula has in store for the late night cabaret, click HERE. Hint hint: Miss Astrid…need I say more?

The Swedish Housewife curates the next three Mezzo Lunatico late night cabarets.

And about that casting call….

Think you have what it takes to be in a hard working troupe? Ever daydream about being in Fame? There’s an open audition in a few weeks that aspiring burlesque starlets won’t want to miss. Stripped Screw, who threw down this year with some amazing postmodern shows like What to Wear to the Apocalypse and Paradise Glossed, have released the following call:

After an incredibly successful inaugural year, Stripped Screw Burlesque is expanding! Stripped Screw Burlesque likes to keep a sharp edge. Focusing on the movement and the meaning behind it, we are not all about glam. Call us raw, call us gritty, call us whatever you like. We like to think of what we do as postmodern burlesque.

We are looking to add some bright new burlesque talent to our ranks. Auditions will be held Saturday, February 5th from 1-7pm at TPS (aka upstairs at the Seattle Center House, 4th floor).

Male and Female performers welcome.
We are looking for performers with:
• A solid dance background;
• Some burlesque experience (preferred, though not required);
• The desire to be part of a troupe:
• The ability to fulfill troupe responsibilities as well as personal booking responsibilities;
• The capacity to work well with others;
• An imaginative and creative Burlesque point of view.

We are also open to performers with musical and acting backgrounds, but some dance training is a must. Please send your headshot and performance bio/resume to strippedscrew@gmail.com.

Come prepared to learn and perform a bit of choreography and with a solo act (preferably burlesque, but can be any type of act) to perform. If you are interested in attending the auditions but can only attend for part of the time allotted, please let us know and we will try to accommodate your schedule.

Check Stripped Screw’s page on the sidebar at right for more information in the coming weeks.-J.Price
