Everything’s better in Texas: The 2011 Dallas Burlesque Festival

Roxie Moxie's Faust number

The 2011 festival circuit kicks off this weekend with The Dallas Burlesque Festival (January 21-22). I have a soft spot for burlesquers from my home state of Texas, and this year Coco Lectric (from Houston, residing in Austin) and Roxie Moxie (a Texas transplant, residing in Seattle) will be a part of the Saturday night showcase at House of Blues. Roxie will duet with Minetta Lane (Seattle) in their Faustian number performed previously with Stripped Screw. Being seduced by the devil into the ways of burlesque is a suitable theme for Texas peeling.

Roxie shared a few thoughts on returning to TX for the weekend:

I went to DBF last year with my Voodoo Chicken act, and they invited me back again this year to perform in the Saturday night showcase at House of Blues. So I thought hey – we should bring Faust! It’s one of my favorite acts, and I love duets (which are relatively rare in festivals). Plus it has fire. And everything is better when there’s fire.

I’m extremely excited to go back and perform in my hometown (well, I still claim Austin is REALLY my hometown, but I guess Dallas counts too). Last year was amazing, with crowds of over 500 people per night, and they’re expecting even bigger crowds this year. It should be a fabulous time – I can’t wait for Minetta and I to REPRESENT!

Producer/performer and New York School of Burlesque instructor Darlinda Just Darlinda (NYC) will also perform Saturday. For a youtube trailer, tickets, and info on The Dallas Burlesque Festival, check out their website HERE

Photographer Kaylin Idora did a shoot with Coco Lectric in New Orleans a few days ago, and has generously shared this sizzling photo from an iconic New Orleans balcony:

  2. Hi! Since you wrote this about last year’s festival, I thought you might want to know the details for this year’s festivities! We would love to see you there!

The fourth-annual Dallas Burlesque Festival is a Texas-sized tribute to classic and neo-burlesque, attracting sold out crowds since its beginning in 2009. This year the festival is the biggest yet with four nights of scintillating bump and grind, parties and more. During this four day period, over 75 eye-popping acts from award-winning burlesque super stars, burlesque legends and beautiful pin up girls will take the stage at the beautifully appointed House of Blues Dallas. In addition, this year’s festivities include a pin up pageant, awards dinner, fashion shows and a live pin up photo shoot, and, on Sunday night, a lavish dinner and show hosted by Dish Restaurant.

Burlesque superstar Michelle L’amour (2005 Miss Exotic World/Burlesque Hall of Fame; Chicago) will be featured along with special guests boylesque star Bazuka Joe of the Stagedoor Johnnies (Best Troupe, Burlesque Hall of Fame; Chicago), the Schlepp Sisters (NYC) and Dallas burlesque star and current New Orleans Burlesque Festival’s Queen of Burlesque, Ginger Valentine. Coco Lectric (New Orleans’s Burlesque Festival’s Queen of Burlesque 2010, Austin) along with the Jigglewatts will perform at the Texas Tease Show. Dallas Burlesque legend and former Jack Ruby dancer, Tammi True will also give a special performance on Saturday night.
