Jasper McCann & Lily Verlaine (Photo by Christopher Nelson)

‘Tis the season of casting calls and big, big plans getting underway for summer events.

One week from today, there’s an open audition call for a new Verlaine/McCann Production (the first of two calls, actually). Anything that the production/performance duo of Lily Verlaine and Jasper McCann put their pretty and ridiculously talented heads to is sure to be not only artistically groundbreaking, but a guaranteed class act. More details on the intriguing new show to come- for now, here’s the info on the open audition call:

From the Desks of Lily Verlaine & Jasper McCann (reposted with permission)

Lily Verlaine & Jasper McCann, producers of Land Of The Sweets: The Burlesque Nutcracker and Through The Looking Glass: The Burlesque Alice In Wonderland, are pleased to announce an audition for dancers, burlesque artists, acrobats, and circus performers of any gender for consideration for roles in their all-new (as yet untitled) production that will premiere the second week of August 2012 at Seattle’s illustrious Triple Door. Dancers must be available August 8th from 10am-midnight and August 9th and10th from 5pm-midnight.

We are in search of strong, multifaceted performers with backgrounds in ballet, belly dance, theater, and burlesque, especially performers who are adaptable and work well in an ensemble. Where acrobats are concerned, we are seeking performers who are part of an existing duo or are willing to perform as a duo. While this production is burlesque-focused, not all roles necessitate nudity and nudity will not be a part of the audition process.

Audition will be held on two dates-you need only attend one:

Sunday April 29th
Check in at 10:30 a.m., auditions begin at 11:00 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m.

Tuesday May 1st:
Check in at noon, auditions begin at 12:30 p.m. and end at 2:30 p.m.

If you are interested, R.S.V.P. by email to: nvseason2011@gmail.com.

Please include resume, headshot, links to video if you have it and the audition time that is convenient for you. We will send audition location information with your confirmation.

Dancers and burlesque performers will be taught a short dance combination at the audition; rehearsal attire is recommended. Floor is slick, please keep in mind when selecting footwear. Dance sneakers are recommended.

All other performers should prepare a short (4 minutes max) routine showcasing their skills.

If are you are interested but you are unable to attend these audition times, please contact us about video submission.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,
Lily Verlaine & Jasper McCann

Kitten de Ville, one of the headliners at the Texas Burlesque Festival 2012

-Written and photographed by Paul O’Connell of POC Photo (Contributor, Seattle)

For the second year in a row I traveled down to Austin to photograph and perform in the Texas Burlesque Festival, now in its fifth year. Produced by Lynn Raridon and co-produced by Jigglewatts co-founder Coco Lectric, the TXBF is three nights of burlesque performers seductively (and sometimes aggressively) removing their clothes for you. Some travel from as far as Seattle and New York, but most hail from The Lone Star State.

The festival was divided into three nights, all hosted by the fantastic Cora Vette, whose wonderful singing voice is matched only by her deep well of dirty jokes. The first night was devoted to burlesque performers with experience under two years. The second featured more seasoned performers and was headlined by Legend Shannon Doah and Miss Exotic World 2002 winner, Kitten de Ville. The final evening was the competition, headlined by Ray Gunn, Kristina Nekyia & The Reigning Queen of Burlesque herself, Miss Indigo Blue.

This year I was privileged to be selected for the Thursday night showcase (performing as my alter ego, Man Johnson) with Roxie Moxie as my fetish Hello Kitty. For Thursday and Friday’s events, an audience favorite is chosen to perform again at the Saturday night competition. I was grateful to place second as an audience favorite for the Thursday night show; the winner however, was Jasper St. James from San Antonio, TX.

I love Austin burlesque. It feels like Seattle’s burlesque sister city. Two former Seattleites who now call Austin home- Roxie Moxie and Sassy Delure- are producing a new show called Lowbrow at the Highball Presents: GLAMOURESQUE!, now in its second installment. Other Seattle expatriates appearing in Lowbrow are aerialist Michele Frances and former Sinner Saint Burlesque host Nicole Lucas, who will MC. Also on the bill is Eva Strangelove, Ginger Snaps, and Jigglewatts co-founders Coco Lectric and Ruby Joule. (If you’re in Austin on May 5th, go to the Highball to see this show).

Some of the highlights of festivals and shows for me are what happens after- like dining at three in the morning with seven other burlesquers at Austin’s Magnolia Cafe. Not only were the Elvis pancakes cool- but between us, we represented burlesque from seven states and eight cities. After that, I got back to the lobby to find Ray Gunn and Indigo Blue ready to shoot one of her “Queen’s Edict” videos. Since being crowned Reigning Queen of Burlesque, Indigo has filmed four Edict videos. (I shot and edited the first two, and while we were there in Austin we were trying to figure out what the fifth should be). Inspiration struck Indigo and Ray- so up to Indigo’s room we went to film a sexy video at 4:30 in the morning. A perfect way to officially end the festival. (Look for the video soon).

I’d like to give a special shout out to my TXBF roomie Stormy Leigh from Tuscon, AZ who gave a very “logical” performance and fellow photographer Steve DeMent.

See you all next at Burlesque Hall of Fame weekend!

Seattle & PDX go to Tease-O-Rama, and what we’ve been up to…

•04/18/2012 • Leave a Comment

It’s been a busy week at Burlesque Seattle Press…our very own Paul O’Connell (aka POC Photo) has just returned from Austin where he both shot and performed as his other alter ego, Man Johnson, at the Texas Burlesque Festival. (That’s right, Paul does it all). Paul’s field notes from Texas are on the way…

And while POC was away, BSP had a very special interview with the one and only DITA VON TEESE. Stay tuned for the article and interview soon to be posted. Suffice it to say that Dita is one in a million, and was an absolute pleasure to talk with.

In celebration of Dita’s upcoming West Coast engagements, in the next few weeks we will share clips of each of the 8 performers on the Burlesque: Strip Strip Hooray! tour.

Today’s pick is French boylesque star Monsieur Romeo in his very sweet tribute “Dita Mon Amour”:

But there’s still more news:

This weekend, Tease-O-Rama returns to San Francisco April 19-22. Created in 2001, the star-studded event boasts that it was the first showcase and convention dedicated to the neo-burlesque revival.

Congrats to our Seattle and Portland performers headed to Tease-O-Rama this weekend, where they will perform with the crème de la crème of modern burlesque:

Angelique DeVil – Portland
Charlotte Treuse – Portland
Meghan Mayhem – Portland
Tana the Tattooed Lady – Portland

Catherine D’Lish – (adopted by) Seattle
Miss Indigo Blue – Seattle
The Shanghai Pearl – Seattle
Polly Wood – Seattle
Iva Handfull – Seattle
Kitty Baby – Seattle
The Booby Trap Players – Seattle

Best of luck to all!

The one, the only, Tease-O-Rama.

Inga Ingenue crowns Jeez Loueez Miss Viva Las Vegas 2012 (POC Photo)

-Written and photographed by Paul O’Connell of POC Photo (Contributor, Seattle)

Viva Las Vegas, now in its 15th year, is “the Biggest Rockabilly Party in The World” with rockabilly fashion, hundreds of souped-up vintage cars, scores of bands, and more neck tattoos than I have ever seen. And of course, burlesque.

The main event for burlesque at VLV was the Saturday night competition at the showroom at The Orleans Hotel, where eight ladies competed for the title Miss VLV 2012. This show was hosted by Dizzy Von Damn, Miss VLV 2008. This year’s honors went to Jeez Loueez of Chicago. Tears came down her face as last year’s Miss VLV, Seattle’s own Inga Ingénue, placed the crown upon her head. Jeez is part of Vaudeville Productions in Chicago, and producer of Jeezy’s Juke Joint: A Black Burly-Q Revue. 1st Runner up was Lydia DeCarllo from Vancouver, Canada and 2nd runner-up was Jolie Goodnight from Austin, Texas. The judges for this competition were the audience; using the special “applause-o-meter”, clearly Jeez Loueez was the winner. After all, she gave an incredible, show-stopping performance.

On Friday, Rick Delaup brought his Bustout Burlesque review from New Orleans for three consecutive shows. These events were hosted by Seattle’s own Vincent Drambuie and featured performances by some of the regular Bustout Burlesque cast- all shaking it to a live jazz band- including Perle Noire, Ginger Valentine, Lola Van Ella and Athena. Throughout Viva, there were also many Burlesque Bingo shows. Audrey DeLuxe brought Bingo to VLV from Los Angeles, with featured performances by some top burlesque beauties such as Inga Ingénue, Coco Lectric, and Kitten de Ville. The concept is simple: as the ladies remove their clothes and fall onto the bingo-numbered floor, players mark off each number. (As that glove hits N44, you mark it off). The ladies strip till “bingo” is called, and then fabulous prizes are given. Seattle’s Miss Kitty Baby attended Viva once again with her Pin-Up Angels, helping to raise money for care packages for deployed servicemen and women.

Once again, what I like about this festival is seeing burlesquers from around the country… and eating at Vegas buffets. Special shout-outs to Miss Kitty Baby and Boom Boom L’Roux for allowing me to share their room, and to fellow photographer Derek Jackson and 1st runner up and all around cool Canadian, Lydia DeCarllo. Look for sexy photos of Lydia from our midnight shoot at The Orleans Hotel coming soon. Next up, I’ll be on the road to the Texas Burlesque Festival in Austin, April 12-14.

As we await Paul O’Connell’s dispatch and photos from the 2012 Viva Las Vegas competition (the lucky winners were announced last night), it’s time to turn some attention to a few unusual burlesque highlights and new faces launching innovative shows this week:

Thursday, April 12 @ Rebar:
EmpeROAR Fabulous!!! Presents: Sing & Sling: A Musical Burlesque Show

In what may be the most atypical burlesque event of the week, Sing & Sling: A Musical Burlesque Show will attempt the siren-like feat of luring you in with beautiful bodies as well as enchanting voices. Many of Seattle’s burlesque performers are also gifted singers: Heidi Von Haught, Ella Titsgerald, Olatsa Assin, Sara Dipity, and of course, EmpeROAR Fabulous will show you what they’re made of this Thursday at Rebar.

EmpeROAR Fabulous took a few moments to explain how the show came about and how he chose the cast:

“Being a musician and burlesque performer, the idea for a show centered on singing burlesque performers has been stewing in my mind for many years,” he said.

“Each performer will be doing two of these three: a straight-up burlesque act, a strictly singing act, or a singing burlesque act. I wanted to create a show that had more dynamics than a parade of burlesquers glued to a stationary microphone. Wireless headsets are a costly investment (it took me four years to get mine), and there are few venues where one can sing to canned music and still be heard over the raucous applause of a good striptease. I am pleased with the variety we’ve attained while still honoring the original intention of the show.”

“The first time I saw Olatsa Assin, I knew I could finally make this show work, so that was a no-brainer. I’ve always loved Heidi Von Haught’s voice, and craved more of it. She worked with a trio to record the music for her act in this show, and it’s going to be side-splitting. I’ve done musical duets with Ella Titsgerald, and being that every one of her burlesque acts includes live singing, I couldn’t do this without including her. Sara Dipity wowed me both when I heard her sing, and saw her strip- her musical theater training oozes through every performance. There were people I just wasn’t able to fit on the bill, and have had people request to be in the next one, so if all goes well, this will be the first of many!”

EmpeROAR Fabulous!!! presents:
Sing & Sling: A Musical Burlesque Show
Thursday April 12th, 8pm, at Re-bar
Tickets available at www.singandsling.eventbrite.com/ for $15, or $18 at the door.

Friday, April 13 @ Rendezvous / Jewelbox Theater:
Dr. Rocket’s Boom Boom L’Roux and Ella Titsgerald Present: Fresh Meat

In order for burlesque performers to shape their routines and improve as entertainers, nothing is more valuable than stage time. Yet to sustain audience interest and quality shows in a super-saturated community, many feel there should be an outlet for working out show business kinks away from the public eye. Still- practice makes perfect, after all. Fresh Meat– which takes place this Friday on the Jewelbox Theater’s cozy, unintimidating stage- is one of a handful of recent events geared toward workshopping and peer reviews.

Fresh Meat is a variety-style evening performance open to anyone to attend, but producers and performers are encouraged to come in order to facilitate constructive feedback. A panel of two to three ‘celebrity’ reviewers are invited (established performers or producers with strong backgrounds in arts, theater, dance, music, etc.) to provide written feedback after the show. The idea is to have fun on a small public stage while gaining valuable experience.

All levels of performers are encouraged to apply for future shows. Boom Boom L’Roux says that the response so far has been overwhelmingly good, and that she and Ella intend to produce Fresh Meat on a quarterly basis as long as there’s interest.

And last but not least, another new venture (and spectacular poster):

Tuesday Tease launches April 17

Tuesday, April 17 @ Lucid Jazz Lounge
Tuesday Tease

Tuesday Tease launches April 17 at LUCID Jazz Lounge in the U District. The show aims to fill the oft-mentioned need for a regularly scheduled burlesque revue with the added chemistry of live musical accompaniment. Featuring the musical stylings of The Lurid Spectacles (Meg van Huygen, Tyson Lynn, and Jono Green) and a rotating cast of Seattle burlesque artists and cabaret singers, the first show features burlesque by Sailor St. Claire, Whisper de Corvo, and Persephone Illyri with vocals by Jen Nelson and host Ace Carter.

Says performer Sailor St. Claire:

“The show is a unique contribution to Seattle’s burlesque scene that allows dancers to work in collaboration with musicians and singers. Most contemporary burlesque shows work with pre-recorded music, orchestrated by a DJ or sound engineer. While that’s a perfectly fine way to run a show, it’s also limiting. Unless a performer has music editing skills, what they can do with their performance is bounded by the music they choose, with little room for improvisation in between highly choreographed 8-counts. Working with a live band allows dancers to extend their music where they need it, enhancing their performance in ways they might not have previously been able to. At Tuesday Tease, dancers work alongside The Lurid Spectacles and guest vocalists from Seattle’s cabaret scene to adapt their pre-existing act concepts to live music, creating a dynamic performance experience for both artists and audience.”

Tuesday Tease takes place at Lucid Jazz Lounge in the U District on the 3rd Tuesday of the month in April, June, August, October and December.
