Armitage Shanks’ Red Light District: Seattle Erotic Art Festival

I rarely find myself in Fremont on a Friday evening as the Capitol Hill nightlife tends to cater to my natural proclivities. This past weekend proved an exception as the Center for Sex Positive Culture brought the annual Seattle Erotic Art Festival to the neighborhood. This year’s astounding bill of performers, from aerialists to drag sensations, sealed the deal on my trip and my ticket.

Entering the thematically appropriate velvet clad studios, I was instantly impressed at the vast amount of visual art on display. After perusing the two immense spaces dedicated to the craft and lingering maybe a little too long at the live action Lusty Lady replication, I searched for a comfortable space to watch the main stage performance. The crowded room lent itself to only a few tables and scattered chairs so most of the audience was obligated to stand. Lights dimmed, a brooding tune filled the hall and our bodies pressed together as more and more patrons filled the room, drawn by the harsh yet darkly beautiful musical motif. Although previously aware of the Festival’s current theme, it was as the melancholic sound filled the room that I truly found myself transported to The Red Light District.

As fans or frequenters of burlesque, I assume that most readers of Burlesque Seattle Press are familiar with striptease as a medium for social or political commentary. In my own experience, willful presentation of sexuality has an uncanny ability to evoke intense emotional response wherein I find myself either strongly attracted or incredibly repulsed by the display. Either way, I feel some way about something. The “Red Light District”, as historically understood, possesses similar qualities- both the allure of primal indulgences, as well as the violence that comes with the illicit trade. This year’s main stage performance at the Seattle Erotic Art festival articulately illustrated this dichotomy, all the while providing the audience with a delectable display of Seattle’s finest performers.

Prior to the Festival, my only experience with the 2011 performance director Armitage Shanks had been with his work as an emcee. An early assumption that the performance would run as many shows do in Seattle, as a series of acts sequentially introduced by the host, was shattered as each individual piece (often a combination of several different performers from aerial to modern dance to pole dancing to boylesque) seamlessly transitioned from one to the next. The only verbal communication emanated from the fantastically talented and hilarious Ben DeLaCrème. Armitage’s extensive musical background nourished the auditory landscape of The Red Light District. Sound-or lack thereof, in the case of Lou Henry Hoover’s silent modern dance piece- played an enormous part in expanding this multi-faceted world.

Another distinguishable characteristic of this year’s main stage production was its apparent male-centricity. With Paris Original, Trojan Original, and the Luminous Pariah bringing a tastefully campy boylesque ménage a trois right out of the gate, Trojan’s acrobatic modern dance duet with Elizabeth Rose, and Luminous’ stunning final entrance as show reached its end, The Red Light District eloquently manifested the multiplicity of masculine sexuality. Fortunately, the stand-out performances made by the trio in no way overshadowed the various feminine explorations such Evilyn Sin Claire’s now infamous burka act. In its entirety, Armitage Shanks’ intellectually charged Red Light District succeeded in encompassing the many external and internal conflicts that sex and sexuality provoke in all of us and the humanistic beauty of it all.

Beach Girls: Lily Verlaine and Kitten LaRue (Photo Chris Blakeley)

It’s hard to articulate the manys reasons I’m head over heels for La Danse! Le Burlesque! L’Edition Francaise. I love it so much I’m feeling squirmy inside and can only resort to begging and pleading with everyone I know to do one thing: GO. This show will widen your view of what unique results occur when burlesque and dance collide with inspiration, fearlessness, and three visionary choreographers.

Lily Verlaine, Olivier Wevers, and Kitten LaRue choregraphed three individual performance suites tied together by French music and nostalgic pop culture- and of course, burlesque. It’s smoldering, playful and full of surprises:

L’Edition Francaise features an all star cast: Miss Indigo Blue, Kitten LaRue, Lily Verlaine, Bunny Monroe, The Luminious Pariah, Paris Original, Changra La-La, Trojan Original, Stella Saintclair, Inga Ingenue, Sassy DeLure and Scott Bartell (both of whom are flying in just for these performances). The three nights of shows also feature the formidable talents of Kylie Lewallen and Ty Cheng of Spectrum Dance Theater.

Boutique, Beebo, Brass, and Bardot: another week of burlesque in Seattle.

There’s an incredible amount of news and provocative performance this week- a whole lotta shakin’ is indeed going on.   Here are the highlights:

The Burlesque Boutique

Ruby Mimosa (Photo Ji Ji Lee)

Ruby Mimosa (aka Tanya Harris) is a very busy and much loved lady of Seattle burlesque. She’s now the fourth official member of Dance Belt (alongside Inga Ingenue, Waxie Moon, and Lou Henry Hoover), as well as a member of burlesque super-troupe The Atomic Bombshells and an instructor at Miss Indigo Blue’s Academy of Burlesque. Ruby Mimosa is also a budding entrepreneur- her much anticipated one stop shop for performers and burlesque aficionados is currently getting into gear and is set to open this year. The Burlesque Boutique will be making its presence known this spring and summer as Ruby focuses on funding, store planning, and inventory. (Some may have already seen the boutique’s elegant teaser postcards around town).  You can also meet Ruby and chat with her about the shop at BurlyCon this year.

The Burlesque Boutique will be headed by Ruby- er, Tanya- who has eleven years of extensive retail experience and a Bachelors of Science in Fashion Merchandising under her belt. Her vision for The Burlesque Boutique is not only for the Capitol Hill store to offer high quality performance accessories and embellishments, but to share her space with designers who create burlesque-related garments or other merchandise. With her many talented vendors, she plans to offer an array of sparkly and daring items for everyone including books, films, and educational materials in a cozy, lounge-style shop. Community is a huge part of Seattle burlesque, and the shop aspires to bring together fans, performers, costumers, and designers in a way that will raise profiles and provide some excellent shopping. Forget “Legs Avenue”. Bring on The Burlesque Boutique.

How can you help? The Burlesque Boutique is currently seeking start-up funding and would love to hear from you. Please visit The Burlesque Boutique’s funding campaign HERE and sign up for the newsletter HERE.

You can also catch up with the enterprising Ruby herself, as she’ll be appearing this Thursday through Saturday in the incredible La Danse! Le Burlesque! L’Edition Francaise! at The Triple Door.   Here’s a sneak peek at Ruby in action from last year’s inaugural show:

Lily Verlaine, Kitten LaRue, and Olivier Wevers present: La Danse! Le Burlesque! L’Edition Francaise! (May 26-28)

Lily Verlaine and Kitten LaRue? Magnifique!

This show was the most sophisticated and breathtaking set of choreography I saw in 2010. The show unfolds in three segments:

Lily Verlaine hatched the idea for an evening of Francophilic entertainment after being exposed to Serge Gainsbourg’s 1972 concept album, L’Histoire De Melody Nelson.  A new twist on Gainsbourg’s semi-autobiographical Lolita tale, Verlaine’s version contains guilty longing, libidinous body language, anthropomorphic sea creatures and cars, dangling aerialists and outrageous love scenes. (Watch for a breathtaking Indigo Blue in an appearance as a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost hood ornament…the spectacle must be seen to be believed).

Kitten LaRue presents a lighthearted bon-bon that takes its cues from televised music and dance shows of the go-go 1960s. Technicolor balloons, fishnetted femmes, youthful defiance and surreal vignettes set the mood for this hyper-real interpretation of France’s “ye-ye girls,” including Francoise Hardy, France Gall and Brigitte Bardot.

Olivier Wevers, currently emerging as one of the world’s most captivating and sought-after young choreographers, presents a farcical, gender bending romp expertly danced by the stunning Kylie Lewallyn  and partner Ty Cheng (both of Spectrum Dance Theater and Whim W’Him). Cats howl, legs extend to impossible heights, and the brash becomes beautiful.

Beebo Brinker Pulp Cabaret #2 (Thursday May 26)

Who doesn’t love a steamy pulp novel about forbidden female desire played out in Greenwich Village and the underground gay bars of 1950’s New York?  The monthly Beebo Brinker Pulp Cabarets continue this week at Rebar with a second installment to  accompany the actual Beebo Brinker Chronicles (Central Heating Lab @ ACT Theatre).  Adapted by Kate Moira Ryan and Linda S. Chapman and directed by Katjana Vadeboncoeur (aka burlesque performer Cherry Manhattan),  the shows are based on the campy cult novels of Ann Bannon.  The cabaret this week will be hosted by Cherry Manhattan and feature:

Fuchsia FoXXX
Shanghai Pearl
Lady Ta Tas
Anita Goodmann
Kitty Baby and the PinUp Angels
Cherry Manhattan
Rebecca Olson
Live music by: Gun Street Glory

Spring has sprung.

…and while we’re on the subject of “sprung”, today’s Featured Photo is a phenomenal shot of Darlinda Just Darlinda by photographer and BSP Contributor, Chris Blakeley.

Darlinda Just Darlinda (photo by Chris Blakeley)

New York burlesque star Darlinda Just Darlinda was captured by Chris here in Seattle on the Dangerous Curves Ahead: Burlesque on the Go-Go tour, which included a stop with Indigo Blue and Heidi Von Haught at West Hall. The most amazing thing about this act was that this is how it began. Darlinda nailed a super-charged strip to Tina Turner’s sizzling version of “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.” It left me speechless, as does this photo.

Thank you to Chris Blakeley for the Featured Photo (you can see the rest of the photo set from the show HERE) and thank you to Darlinda Just Darlinda for her incredible ass. She is a sight to behold.

Next up for Chris Blakeley will be photos & a review of tonight’s benefit Get Them to Vegas! at West Hall.

Do you like to give or receive?

•05/18/2011 • Leave a Comment

Is it better to be the giver or the receiver? This seems to be the sexy little question looming in the air this week in Seattle. Luckily you can indulge in a bit of both with several noteworthy events and stimulating news items this weekend. Go ahead- be bad. Be good. Be a glutton for punishment. Or just be anonymous.

Allow me to explain:

If you’re feeling a little voyeuristic, SEAF (Seattle Erotic Arts Festival) takes place this weekend and features an array of the very best in erotic visual arts, live performance, literary arts, and installations. The Festival (now in its ninth year) attracts thousands of visitors annually and continues to grow, most recently under the masterful hand of Festival Director Clayton Hibbert. This year SEAF transforms Fremont Studios into the Red Light District, a new performance space specifically arranged to showcase multiple art forms as well as the Erotic Short Film Exhibition. SEAF’s main stage shows (directed by David Crellin, aka Armitage Shanks) will feature performers such as Evilyn Sin Claire, The Luminous Pariah, Ben DelaCreme, Paris Original, Lou Henry Hoover, Trojan Original, and post-modern aerial circus and dance company ticktock. Workshops will also be given by Miss Indigo Blue and Jesse Belle-Jones. Eva Luna and Twisted Monk (among others) provide ambient performances- something tells me that there will be rope. SEAF takes place May 20-22; check out their beautiful website HERE.

Perhaps you want to do a little more than just watch? If so, you may have noticed that this week’s issue of The Stranger calls for HUMP! 7 submissions. The self-proclaimed (and pretty much indisputable) biggest and best amateur-and-locally-produced porn festival of the Pacific Northwest is accepting short film submissions HERE. The screenings take place in November in Seattle and Portland, and if you’ve never attended I can assure you that it is equal parts dirty, funny, sexy, and fun as all hell. As if that weren’t exciting enough…the poster children for this year’s HUMP! ads feature Coco Capone of burlesque-dance troupe Heavenly Spies and Faggedy Randy of Can Can Castaways. Such eye candy, and these are just the teasers.

So much for the receiving. Maybe you’ve been a fan/fiend for the erotic and burlesque arts all year long and then some. Now it’s time to give in return. When it comes to the arts, it’s of utmost importance to put your money where your mouth is from time to time and give a little back to the artists that you love. It’s what keeps them on stage and constantly creating, as it should be. We live in a city rich with talent. Giving something back is the sexiest possible way to show your appreciation. For starters, Lily Verlaine’s Kickstarter campaign for The Stargazer Gown- which will be worn to compete for the Reigning Queen of Burlesque title- is in full swing and time is running out. You can be a patron of Lily’s for as little as $5 (with some titillating benefits) over HERE. After the countless stellar shows this woman has provided to burlesque fans, how can anyone in good conscience not pitch in? Lily is a beautiful cause.

Become a patron RIGHT THIS SECOND!

Also this Friday, those in the giving mood can take in a show for a cause: Get Them to Las Vegas! A Fundraiser for the Burlesque Hall of Fame takes place at West Hall.

Here’s the skinny:

On Friday May 20th, local Burlesque Legends Eartha Quake and Velvet Ice take the stage along with a bevy of local performers who are competing, performing, or have previously competed at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend! Don’t miss this chance to cheer on the amazing collection of talent who will be representing the Northwest in Las Vegas, June 2nd-5th!
