Season's Cheer, Bettie Page style.

-Written and painstakingly compiled by Paul O’Connell of POC Photo (Contributor, Seattle)

‘Tis the season for an array of beautiful people to remove their clothes…in endless variations of holiday themes. To aid in the noble pursuit of holiday eye candy, what follows is a random list of events where you and your loved ones can loosen up a little and take in a show:

Land Of The Sweets-The Burlesque Nutcracker

Now in its sixth year, Lily Verlaine and Jasper McCann bring their “ecdysiastic splendor, spectacle & pageantry” to The Triple Door for a whopping 21 shows December 14-24. Land of the Sweets has become a holiday tradition for casual fans and burlesque aficionados alike; though the polished and highly successful production continues to grow, Lily and Jasper strive for a few surprises every year:

“This year’s production will delight the newcomer and surprise return visitors to the Land of the Sweets. New cast members formerly of Spectrum Dance Theater and Ballet Bellevue make the dancing even hotter! New costumes designed by Danial Hellman add extra glamour, and fans will get a chance to see the famous ‘Stargazer Gown’ created for Lily Verlaine’s performance at this year’s Burlesque Hall of Fame Main Event.”

Head on over to West Hall in The Oddfellows Building for any of the 8 shows, including 2 performances on Christmas Eve (which is where I’ll be on that night).

Homo for the Holidays is a hearty holiday fruitcake packed with rollicksome reindeer, cocky cookies, ghostly guests, sexy snowstorms, agile angels, musical Maccabees, and new ways to define coming home. It’s not Christmas in July, it’s Pride in December! Light your menorah, stuff your stockings, and join our chosen family in celebrating our favorite wintry holiday of all, HOMO for the Holidays.”

Bootleg Burlesque and a chat with Solange Corbeau and Flirty Sanchez.

Bootleg Burlesque: Saturday, December 3

-Written and photographed by Paul O’Connell of POC Photo (Contributor, Seattle)

Bootleg Burlesque is a new Prohibition-era themed show produced by Solange Corbeau and Flirty Sanchez. The show’s unique concept- proving that budgetary limitations don’t necessarily limit creativity- is the brain child of Solange. With this in mind, the producers requested that the evening’s performers follow certain guidelines:

• All acts must be completely new
• The entire act must cost $50 or less to put together
• No costume piece or prop can be re-used if it has ever seen the burlesque stage before
• No mess, no glitter

Performers are permitted to borrow items from others, as long the items haven’t been previously used for burlesque. Solange explained how she came up with these parameters:

“I love burlesque so much I wasn’t going to let something like a lack of costume budget stand in my way of creating my art. I also figured that there were others in the community who are also in a similar boat, and would appreciate the challenge of working within strict parameters. I know that some of the most creative things I have ever come up with in my life have happened because there has been a boundary. I think that sometimes boundaries give you the freedom to explore.”

Flirty came to the project after meeting Solange in Miss Indigo Blue’s Academy of Burlesque Spring 202 class. “I love how creative, open, and entertaining she is,” Solange says of Flirty. “She is such a gift to the burlesque community. She also doesn’t shy away from challenges, and I really really appreciate that in a person. I spoke with her this past summer about my idea and I was thrilled when she was interested in co-producing with me.”

The space for the show, Happy Endings Urban Mercantile, is also unconventional. It’s an antique store on Capitol Hill. There will be no alcohol served at the venue (or any refreshments) which means nudity is technically permitted (Washington law states that any establishment serving liquor cannot also have nudity). Given the lack of restrictions, there may be performers who incorporate nudity into their acts.

A performer’s personal history and introduction to burlesque is often very interesting. Naturally I asked Bootleg Burlesque’s producers how they got involved in the scene here in Seattle. “I believe that I have loved burlesque since I was very young. I just didn’t know that it was ‘burlesque’ that I loved,” Solange tells me. She grew up studying theater and dance and eventually majored in theater at the University of Texas. She also studied sexuality and the erotic arts. “Shortly after moving to Seattle in 2006 I found out about the burlesque scene here. It took me five years, a ticket to Shine: A Burlesque Musical, a breakup, and a renewed interested in following my own personal bliss to get me to just bite the monetary bullet and enroll in the [Miss Indigo Blue’s] Academy in January 2011.”

Flirty’s introduction came a few months earlier when she decided to quit her high-stress job and do things that previously scared her. “I had been performing as an improviser at the time and I was having trouble committing (one of the most important keys to doing good improv), which ultimately stemmed from doubting myself and the choices I was making on stage. I figured that if I could handle taking my clothes off in front of a room full of strangers, I could handle playing a doctor on Mars who delivered alien babies from milk cartons. I had an improv teacher who had taken boylesque and he highly encouraged me to sign up for the Burlesque 101 class to help me overcome those obstacles.” Needless to say they both enjoyed their 101 experience. “I was beyond hooked,” Flirty said. Eventually Flirty met Solange in a 202 class, and the rest is Bootleg Burlesque history.

Flirty Sanchez performing at The Pink Door (POC Photo)

Both ladies have high hopes for the show. Flirty tells me, “My hope for Bootleg Burlesque is to provide a show that’s a little bit off the beaten path of the Seattle burlesque community. Because the acts are all new and constrained by a budget, it forces the performers to do what they do best – create – under different terms, and in most cases, outside the box. It is so easy to get caught up in the glitz and glamour, as both an audience member and performer, and taking that element out highlights aspects I think really make great acts – connection with the audience, clever reveals, polished movement, compelling story/statement, theatrics, not in the sense of big, fancy props, but rather in the sense of taking the audience on an emotional journey that is entertaining and fulfilling.”

Blue Velvet Burlesque Revue’s “Mondo Exotica” in photos.

•11/25/2011 • 3 Comments

The Blue Velvet Burlesque Revue dancers: Inga Ingénue, Fuchsia FoXXX, and The Shanghai Pearl (POC Photo)

There’s been something unusual happening in the subterranean depths of Highway 99 Blues Club since last summer. Fuchsia FoXXX, The Shanghai Pearl, and Inga Ingénue have been appearing at the southern-style juke joint as The Blue Velvet Burlesque Revue paired with a live band. With these shows, the burlesque stars and co-producers Ed Maloney and Jen Cinquemani strive for the improvisational chemistry that’s naturally occurring when burlesque meets live music. The venue, dating back to 1909, has a long history with blues and rockabilly; so far the response to an infusion of burlesque has been extremely positive.

Blue Velvet shows have been selectively scheduled so far- the first was in July, the second followed in October (the dancers also appeared at October’s SAM Remix), and the third official show, Mondo Exotica, took place last weekend. Although it was bitterly cold outside, the ladies warmed things up with an exotic island feel. Inga was attacked by an amorous tropical-sized insect, the impossibly flexible Fuchsia made “Kokomo” sexy, and Shanghai executed a masterful hands-free garter belt removal… by simply leaning a delicate hip on her trusty chaise lounge.

Rocket in the David Lynch themed show "Black Lodge Burlesque", Portland. (Photo by Happy Robot Photography)

Portland’s Vera Mysteria and a cast of many of Portland’s most creative performers recently launched the successful Black Lodge Burlesque: A Night of Cabaret Inspired by David Lynch at Portland’s Star Theatre. The show was a hit- and rumor has it there may be another installment at some point this spring. The Northwest has a special kinship with all things Lynch; cult hit Twin Peaks was set in a fictional Washington town with exterior shots filmed mostly in Snoqualmie and around North Bend. Perhaps an ambitious Seattle producer should do a little cultural exchanging and bring a Seattle-Portland-David-Lynch hybrid to Seattle this spring, as well…?

Portland’s Happy Robot Photography generously shared some images from Black Lodge with Burlesque Seattle Press. (Check out more from the show and Happy Robot’s Facebook gallery HERE).

Baby Le'Strange as Blue Velvet's Dorothy Vallens (Happy Robot Photography)

In other interesting Portland news, burlesque performer Baby Le’Strange (who stripped from Blue Velvet‘s Dorothy Vallens into the inhalant-crazed Frank Booth) recently spoke at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon on a panel on burlesque as a form of adult entertainment. Baby was joined by a domme, a current and an ex-stripper, and a Sociologist. About fifty students and faculty sat in on the panel.

Seattle performer and producer Randi Rascal also has a penchant for unusual themes in burlesque. Randi and co-producer/performer Heidi Von Haught are diligently planning the third That’s F*cked Up, which was just announced for February 10-12 at ReBar. But more on that in a moment.

Tonight, Randi will pose for artists at Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School at the Rendezvous in Seattle. Randi chatted with me this week via email about her multitude of upcoming events, and life in general:

Burlesque Seattle Press: Hi Randi! What have you been up to lately?

Randi: Since the glitter-whirlwind that was BHOF I’ve been trying very hard to create a period of rest during the holiday season. I have, however, failed. Hard. I was on the programming committee for BurlyCon which, though a labor of love, is a lot of labor! I went to Burning Man. I produced the Reproduction! fundraiser for NARAL Pro-Choice Washington and performed at various other gigs, including traveling to Portland for the Geeklesque show, which got my whistle wet for more touring. Right now I’m striving to minimize my commitments so I’ll have the energy for the big projects coming up next year.

I hear dates for That’s F*cked Up 3 were just announced, plus you’re working on the Neo-Burlesque Road Show…can you tell me anything about these events?

So much exciting stuff is coming around the bend! Literally! Heidi Von Haught and I have just nailed down the dates for TFU3: Feb 10, 11, and 12. We are happy to be returning to the perfect venue for these sort of shenanigans: ReBar. The cast will include both amazing outtatowners–we’ll be welcoming Juicy D. Light from Oakland’s Rubinesque Burlesque and have invited back the incomparable Sabrina Chap- and epic Seattle luminaries, including Waxie Moon and Armitage Shanks.

I’m also thrilled to announce SpeedBump: A Neo-Burlesque Road Trip will be touring in late February! Luminous Pariah, Paris Original, Wiggy Stardust and I will be taking our show on the road, bringing a sample platter of the latest waves in burlesque innovation to the Western half of the U.S. We’re setting up collaborations with local boundary-smashing performers to showcase the performance art side of our beloved medium. I’m humbly overjoyed to be embarking on this phase of my burlesque career with such talented artists.

What have you been inspired by/obsessed with in your own life these days?

Lately I’ve had my nose in Debt: The First 5000 Years, by David Graeber. It’s a fascinating read; I highly recommend it. My background is in Anthropology and I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of cultural norm creation- how we decide what behavior is “right” and why. My intense interest in the financial crisis- which is what brought me to Graeber’s book–and what it means for our culture, is rooted in this. I feel that it is symptomatic of our underlying points of cultural dissonance. Our mass hypocrisies. Ironically, I am infinitely grateful to those hypocrisies, because they are the reason for my art.

Speaking of art…is this your first time at Dr. Sketchy’s? And will it be weird to hold still with all eyes on you, instead of doing a routine? You’d better not be fidgety…

It is! I’ve wanted to pose for them for the longest time and I’m so thrilled to be doing so. I don’t think it’ll be too weird to just hold a pose, but I’ve heard from other performers that it’s much harder than it looks! I’m planning on doing some contortion-y poses though, so I guess I’d better make sure I’m good and warmed up!
