The Heavenly Spies return with MATA HARI

This month is a study in what happens when obsessions collide. Every weekend in November The Heavenly Spies perform their new run, Mata Hari, at Can Can (Fridays) while The Atomic Bombshells turn it out with a different show each week at the newly renovated Columbia City Theatre (Saturdays). Seattle’s burlesque talent pool is stylistically broad- making this month a perfect opportunity for taking in some classic and modern flair all within the span of a weekend. Or several.

For their new production, The Heavenly Spies pinch a little inspiration from original femme fatale Mata Hari (a noted Dutch courtesan and exotic dancer killed by firing squad for espionage in 1917). A few months ago Seattle’s own bejeweled double agent- Agent Rhinestone- told me how The Spies got their start and arrived at their troupe name. It’s nothing as scandalous as revealing military secrets, but still interesting:

Originally Double Oh Sassy (now Sassy DeLure) and I performed with Ultra. I love Ultra- he is to this day one of my favorite performers. We were “Ultra and the Satin Dolls” and we performed at Sonya’s on 1st Avenue. That was in 2003. We didn’t do burlesque at all… actually I don’t think we were even aware of burlesque in Seattle. We were just dancers looking for a new venue and a new way of bringing dance to the masses. If you put sequins on and throw in some jazz hands, modern dance appeals to more people! Anyway, our first show at Can Can was called “The Heavenly Spies”. It was a theme we adopted and then the name just stuck. We started doing burlesque after that first show. We’ve had many incarnations of the group since then- and the style changes with every show.

As for the background of the current incarnation of The Heavenly Spies…I studied ballet all my life and as a kiddo performed with the Sacramento Ballet. I graduated from Cornish with BFA in Dance. Kimberly Galore has a BFA in Dance from Western Washington University. Honey Sexpot studied Ballet at British Dance Academy and was trained in the R.A.D. method (Royal Academy of Dance.) She also studied Modern Dance. Coco Capone studied at the Pacific Dance Company and school in Bellingham.

This Is Halloween ends its run at The Triple Door tonight, with shows repeating 7pm and 10pm. Here’s a few fetching photos courtesy of Chris Blakely from Friday’s performance:

Much cuter than the original Sally.

Halloween weekend continues with two other worthy burlesque and cabaret events this evening:

Last year Stripped Screw- Seattle’s renegade burlesque revue- made their debut with the titillating Uncivilized show. In celebration of their one year anniversary, they’re putting on an encore performance with a few steamy modifications. Even Less Civilized will feature the usual Stripped Screw suspects plus Heidi Von Haught.

Gorelesque Girls also perform five brand new acts Halloween Night at The 7th Annual Cabaret Macabre. The lovely Iva Handfull also stars, and many more.

In celebration of Halloween, I’m happy to present a bonus pic that is dear to my heart- my favorite burlesque photo of all time. I know absolutely nothing about this very special lady, but photographer Chris Blakely’s archives and a little poking around reveal this was taken at the Academy of Burlesque’s Sophomore Strip at the Jewel Box, circa March 2008. Her name? VeraLu, performing as The Unknown Burlesquer.

Chris Blakely’s latest burlesque publication will be surfacing shortly (unlike this M.I.A. stripteaser that has stolen my heart). Check back for further details on the magazine in weeks to come. It’s slated to be a bit of a departure from the last few issues…

In other, more touchy-feely news: The 2nd Annual Cabaret Festival kicks off this weekend at various Seattle venues. This Is Halloween is a burlesque & cabaret take on Tim Burtons’s Nightmare Before Christmas which will run through Halloween night. The performance stars some Can Can Castaways- in disguise.

Even The Castaways turn it out for Halloween.

The Boudoir Bellas

I’ve been itching to write something about Loretta Sin since she returned to Seattle last spring after a brief detour through Colorado. She was one of those performers that had a little something special- and then she disappeared. The former Glitzkrieg girl missed her sparkly bras and shimmy belts, and now she’s back and working again with old friend Tiffany Shimmers in The Boudoir Bellas. The girls have grand schemes under way for the future, but you can catch a sneak peek tonight at the 2bit Saloon in Ballard. Check the event page on Facebook HERE

Also tonight:

GRAB MY JUNK! @ Rebar, show at 7:30pm. A burlesque gameshow promising inappropriate touching and scads of prizes, hosted by NYC’s Jonny Porkpie (Pinchbottom Burlesque) and Ernie Von Schmaltz. Guest stars include Jo Boobs, The Shanghai Pearl, Luminous Pariah, and Randi Rascal.

Blue Moon Cabaret @ Pampas Room. Starring Lux La Croix (a regular with Lucha VaVoom and occasionally in drag as the artist formerly known as Prince) and Inga Ingénue. Bar only seating is now available, and so worth it. The Pampas Room is a lovely little hideout to see a show.

The Atomic Bombshells @ The Crocodile, 9:30pm. Before launching next month’s residency at Columbia City Theatre, tonight the ladies shake it at The Croc for City Arts, the four day music and arts fest under way now.

BurlyCon- the annual conference for burlesque performers and superfans- busted its seams this year with 200 attendees. Aspiring showgirls and excitable observers (such as myself) rubbed elbows with um, teaches and peaches.

Speaking of which, here’s a photo of Curator/Co-founder/author and all-around class act Jo Boobs with Twisted Monk, a former stuntman that imparted hair-pulling techniques and groin shot secrets in “Stage Combat” class:

Read my quick and dirty review of BurlyCon in The Stranger, HERE. Stay tuned also for a BSP mini interview with educator and ultra-animated performance-stripper Tigger! (NYC), coming soon.

The next few weeks are packed with opportunities to see why Seattle is such a hotbed of burlesque and other outlaw professions. For one thing, HUMP tickets are finally on sale. Go see what filthy minds are filming, get tickets HERE.

This Thursday, Lucha VaVOOM’s cabaret of Mexican luchador wrestling and burlesque pageantry returns to The Showbox at The Market. Some of you may recall the insidious efforts of the Department of Licensing to kill Lucha VaVOOM’s May appearance, classifying the show as “sports entertainment” and forcing the troupe to jump through near-insurmountable, expensive “compliance” hoops one week before the event. No problems are anticipated this time, as the choreographed fight cabaret has had ample time to follow necessary protocol. Halloween Maskerade promises to blow out the usual themes and costumes.
