Continuing our series of chats with the Seattle performers soon off to shake their moneymakers in Vegas at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekender, today we bring you a quick n’ dirty Q&A with Kitten N’ Lou, who will compete at the 24th Annual Tournament of Tease in the “Best Group” category…

***

Burlesque Seattle Press: You and Lou are both seasoned performers with a ton of dance training between the two of you. Then together you fuse into a dancing duo that really ranks up there in my book with some of those famous duos from the MGM musicals you were raised on. Can you give us a little A-Z of your dance background, and Lou’s?

Kitten LaRue: Awww, that’ s so sweet! One of our favorite press quotes described us as a “fluorescent Fred and Ginger” (21st Century Burlesque Magazine), who we of course idolize! I grew up doing your standard ballet/tap/jazz training my whole life, was a “Dixie Darling” in college (yep, full on pom-pom wielding dance team cheerleader!), and then started my burlesque career in New Orleans, learning classic bump n’ grind moves from legends like Wild Cherry and Kitty West. Lou has a much more intense dance training background, studying dance from age 3 through a BFA. He has had a decade long career in Seattle as a contemporary dancer, choreographer, and teacher before melting hearts everywhere as a stripping drag king!

BSP: What have you and Lou been up to so far this year? A whole lot of traveling and performing abroad we see…and you’re bi-coastal now!

KL: WHEW it has been quite the whirlwind year! We got married last July, and it’s been absolutely non-stop since literally the day after our wedding. Our yearly summer residency in Provincetown and an Australian tour with my troupe The Atomic Bombshells, a month long European tour as Kitten N’ Lou, producing DeLouRue shows with BenDeLaCreme (who had quite the year herself!), and somehow we managed to find ourselves a sweet little pad in Manhattan in the midst of all this! Being bi-coastal has been really fortifying….we love Seattle for how it has nurtured and sustained our artistic endeavors for years, but it’s also been thrilling to get new inspiration from the energy and incredible artists living in NYC. Our two worlds collide this week: Lou and I will be performing in BenDeLaCreme’s Off-Broadway debut, “TERMINALLY DELIGHTFUL” at the Laurie Beechman theater in NYC!

BSP: What are your previous histories with attending or performing at BHoF?

KL: I had the honor and pleasure of being invited to perform my Lily Christine Cat Girl tribute act in the Legends showcase at BHOF several years ago. It was so fabulous and special to get to share a backstage with all of the legends who were also performing that night. I spent much of the evening chatting with La Savona, and the stories that woman had, let me tell you….! She gave me an autographed photo of herself as a sexy intergalactic explorer which then became my inspiration to create The Atomic Bombshells “Lost In Space” show. Lou and I went to BHOF together (Lou’s first) last year with Dr. Jen as spokesmodels for Atomic Cosmetics and had a total blast! We essentially created a buzz just from changing our outfits every two hours and having a ridiculous non-stop fashion parade, ha! We left that weekend feeling inspired and re-invigorated about the form itself.

BSP: How do you feel about being included this year, along with so many other friends & family from Seattle burlesque?

KL: We just feel so honored and excited to be competing for Best Duo! Seattle has definitely made a name for itself internationally as being a truly accomplished BQ scene, and the number of people repping the PacNW this year only further solidifies that. Lou and I are excited to represent not just Seattle burlesque, but the drag, dance, and queer communities that we are both deeply entrenched in as well. The work we create is a collision of all of these expressive worlds, and we are excited to bring that sensibility to Vegas.

BSP: Traditionally, you’re not one to enter into competitive festivals and such around the country. What made this year feel special to you?

KL: BHoF wasn’t a possibility for me for several years because I was touring extensively every summer with my band The Intelligence, which I’m now taking time off from to focus solely on performing and producing. I’ve also been very fortunate to have created a sustainable career as a producer/performer for the last decade, without doing much of the festival/competition circuit… but BHoF is so much more than just a competition, as anyone who’s ever been can attest to. It’s a chance to perform on the biggest stage in your industry, for and with your peers, fans, and heroes, and to feel part of something so expansive and magical! It’s an amazing way to pay homage to Dixie and all of the legends who are THE reason we get to be professional weirdos now. This year also felt special in that Lou and I have started to create work specifically as a duo fairly recently, and the response that we’ve gotten from audiences and our peers has been so loving, supportive, and enthusiastic that we just want to spread it all over the place!

BSP: Any little hints at what we can expect in Vegas?

KL: Just a couple of sparkly dancing married super gay drag clowns performing the most ecstatic disco suicide pact you’ve ever seen. (In glorious Danial Webster costumes of course!)

After BHoF, Kitten N’ Lou will be performing at World Pride in Toronto. Here in Seattle, you can catch Lou Henry Hoover in There Once Was A Man (June 20 & 21 @ ReBar)…and don’t miss the annual extravaganza that is Freedom Fantasia (July 2 & 3 @ The Triple Door), featuring of course, both Kitten N’ Lou.

Of the many gifts that Seattle burlesque has bestowed upon the world, the outstanding talents of the brothers Original might be some of the most enthralling. Twin brothers Paris and Trojan are both exceptional dancers and jaw-dropping teasers, yet each maintains his own truly unique style and character. This year, the brothers are both competing for the title of “Best Boylesque,” along with Seattle’s Eddie Van Glam and New York’s Mr. Gorgeous in the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekender’s 24th Annual Tournament of Tease. To the lucky ladies and gentlemen who will witness the boylesque competition at the Orleans Hotel in June: bring your opera glasses and hold onto your g-strings. These boys are masters of the craft.

Paris Original is no stranger to the Vegas stage. Returning to compete for the title “King of Burlesque” for his second time, the sweet and handsome Paris chatted with BSP about his background and upcoming performance.

BSP: What’s your performance background? How did you get into burlesque?

Paris Original: My performance background began when I was twelve. I started in theater, which quickly got me into musical theater, and eventually into operettas and an opera. It was through my experiences in community theater that I was led to dance, which I began pursuing when I was 18. At first I took all the classes I could, studying tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, and ballet. Once I got into the Evergreen City Ballet when I was 20 my training took on a heavy ballet focus.

I got into burlesque when I met The Luminous Pariah in 2009. One day, he told me Waxie Moon and Paula the Swedish Housewife were holding auditions for House of Thee UnHoly and I asked him if he could get me an audition. He did, and I made the cast. That first experience was truly epic and got me hooked on the art form.

BSP: How do you feel about returning to the BHoF stage? Are you planning on doing things differently this year?

PO: I’m so thrilled and honored to be returning! And it’s so exciting to be part of such a large Seattle contingent as well. I’m so proud of Seattle burlesque! I feel really good about the performance I gave last year, so I’m not really planning on doing things differently per se. Though I will be rehearsing more often before going to Vegas since the act I’m doing this year is one I don’t perform very often so it doesn’t feel as ingrained in my body.

BSP: How are you preparing?

PO:  Firstly, I’m finishing up my costume. Almost done! I’ve been updating it quite a bit to make it better and more functional. Secondly, I had to shorten my act to fit the time constraints so I’m revamping the choreography as well and rehearsing it a bunch. I want to be as familiar with it as possible before I leave so that when I get there I don’t have to stress out about it.

BSP: How does it feel to be competing against your brother?

PO: It’s actually really exciting that we’re both competing! I’m also competing WITH my brother in our trio with Lily Verlaine so it’ll be an interesting night. Ultimately it doesn’t really feel like we’re competing against each other at all. We’re so different as performers, and the acts we’re bringing are completely different, too. I just want us both to do our best.

BSP: If you could offer one pro tip to burgeoning boylesque performers, what would it be?

PO: Consider the audience!

Picks of the Glitter: Hogwarts, Nakedness, and a BHoF Fundraiser.

This week there are some unique burlesque shows happening in the fair city of Seattle. First up in this week’s Picks of the Glitter is Accio Burlesque! A Burlesque Tribute to Harry Potter.

Accio Burlesque (designed by Scarlett O'Hairdye)

Accio Burlesque (designed by Scarlett O’Hairdye)

Sailor St. Claire brings us a new version of last year’s successful nerdlesque tribute to Harry Potter with a 90% new cast at the Annex Theater for three nights starting Thursday, May 22.

Here’s what Sailor had to say about some of the new performers this year:

Sailor St Claire: Many of the performers in the show this year are people I have never gotten the chance to work with before as a producer, which is really exciting for me personally. I had dreamed that Flirty Sanchez would be in the show last year as the character she’s playing this year, but that didn’t manifest. She had told me after the show that she had wanted to work with me on a project, but wasn’t an HP fan, so she didn’t feel like she had anything to submit. This year, I put a bug in her ear about it, which in turn made her start reading the series, and she’s found a really unique approach to a particularly irksome character. Flirty jokes that, if nothing else, working on Accio has made her a more literate stripper. I really can’t wait for everyone to see what she’s come up with!

It’s also been great to work with some of the newer faces in the Seattle scene. Verity Germaine comes to burlesque from Seattle theatre, so she knows her way around a stage pretty well. She’s channeling some serious carnival showgirl realness in her number for Accio and I think it’s really going to wow people. And Sin de la Rosa and Will Lykya blew me away with their smokin’ hot duet.

There are also a couple of darker, modern dance-infused pieces in the show from Jesus La Pinga and Maxie Milieu. Maxie’s act is straight up terrifying, and Jesus’s number is very powerful and sad. It brought me to tears the first time I saw him workshop it and I still feel that way even after seeing it 4 times. This is a real departure from the kind of high-energy, campy work we’re used to seeing from Jesus, and I am excited for him to show it to everyone next week! We also have a musician joining the cast this year. Allie Coy is a local singer-songwriter, and a die-hard Harry Potter fan! She’s bringing a couple of her original songs about Hogwarts to share with us before she heads off to play The Warped Tour this summer.

As of this writing, there were only a handfull of tickets left. If they’re sold out you might have to use your own wizardry to acquire some over at Accio Burlesque .

Fertility Rite (designed by Solange Corbeau)

Up next is Fertility Rite. Rarely seen late-night, full-nudity, avant-garde burlesque by some of Seattle’s most well-known performers playing at Ballard Underground for one night only Saturday, May 24 in a midnight show. I asked the show’s producer, Solange Corbeau, a few questions about her latest endeavor:

POC: Tell me about Fertility Rite.

Solange Corbeau: …Having the show in the Ballard Underground is ideal for providing an environment that supports artists and frees them from some of the restrictions performers have to work around at other venues. Here, the acts can be expressive as well as thought provoking and leverage a wider range of subject matter and performance technique to create memorable artistic experiences. It takes burlesque back into the realm of theatre, and that gets me really excited.

POC: What would you like to see for the future of this show?

Solange: Id love for this to be a quarterly show. My dream is for it to showcase exceptionally talented performers from Seattle, but also be a destination spot for visiting performers who are known for their more boundary pushing neo-burlesque pieces. I would also love to open it up to other kinds of performers as well. While my heart is very much in the burlesque and theatre scene, I do welcome the addition of other kinds of theatrical and cabaret acts. All nude string quartet? Political puppetry? I’m interested!

And finally we have BRING IT Seattle’s Burlesque Hall of Fame Fundraiser! This show plays at West Hall Saturday, May 24. Around the country performers hold Legend Challenge events. These events raise critical funds for elderly legendary performers who may need assistance with airfare and accommodations, so that they can continue providing guidance and inspiration to the younger generations.

As Miss Indigo Blue explained, “This show will be an awesome opportunity to see almost ALL of Seattle’s competition acts *without even leaving town!* How cool is that? I’m so proud of our incredible community and all of the artists who contribute to the Burlesque Hall of Fame weekend by competing, applying, volunteering and attending! Oh,and did I mention that there will be a freakin’ CAKE WALK at this show? Dessert and Boobs and Boys! What could be better?”

Next up in our series of spotlights on Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekender performers and competitors, we bring you another conversation with our hometown girl gone NYC – the one and only Sydni Deveraux. Sydni will represent NYC as well as her Seattle roots when she competes for the title “Reigning Queen”.  Last year Sydni burlesqued her beautiful rump off, scoring the title “First Runner-Up: 2013 Reigning Princess of Burlesque”.  We can only imagine what she’ll unleash on that hallowed BHoF stage come Tournament night this year.

Without further ado, here’s our quick n’ dirty chat with Sydni from NYC:

BSP: In the pantheon of special glittery people the world over, you are hands-down one of the single most passionate burlesque performers and fans I know.  You not only work incredibly hard, but you are constantly finding ways to be involved, to encourage, and to grow the community in a positive way.  You live and breathe burlesque and it really pays off in your performance and in your star power… obviously, because here you are going off to compete again! How does it feel to have another shot at the title “Miss Exotic World 2014, the Reigning Queen of Burlesque”?

Sydni Deveraux: I am super excited to have another shot to perform on the biggest night of the year in burlesque. It’s such an honor- I know that they have a really hard time picking. So many more than just 11 of us deserve to be up there.

BSP: You’ve been attending BHoF and performing there since 2006. Do you feel like every time you’ve attended or performed, you’ve taken away something new from the experience?

Sydni: Every time! One year was a party year. Another was loving the conversations with the Legends. Performing in 2010 and 2013 were years of extreme growth for me. I hope to kind of have an amalgam of all of it this year. I want to meet more people, be inspired, kiss every Legend and reconnect with friends I don’t get to see every year. The cherry on my cupcake will be rocking the stage. I also didn’t have a lot of pool time last year, and maybe I’ll get to fix that. 😉

BSP: How are you preparing this time around? Any hints at what we can expect?

Sydni: Well, I’m back in what we call “Camp Cathy”, lots of yoga, smoothing out some parts in my choreography and lots of chats with Catherine to make sure that I bring something that we’re both super excited about. I’m also rehabbing my knee, but I’m doing my best to honor my body, but not slow down my momentum. There’s plenty to be worked on without my knee! My dress was designed with her help (it was also my wedding dress, so it’s truly sentimental in a billion ways) – she gave me the secrets to her voluminous skirts and it is SO FUN to dance around in 450 yards of tulle. It’s my hope to make her, the Legends, myself (and those who dig me) proud.

BSP: You recently moved to NYC from Seattle, and have been a busy lady since you’re been away.  What have you been up to in your (honorary) new home?

Sydni: Well, I hit the ground running! I am associate producer for Wasabassco- I work closely with Doc (Wasabassco) and the ridiculous genius of Nasty Canasta. In many ways I’m being taken under their wing- learning about the business of burlesque from a different angle and together we are growing a brand of excellent entertainment. Through them I host a show every Tuesday night in Manhattan at a beautiful space called Bathtub Gin, perform in various shows throughout the week, and then I have my baby- a big production in a gorgeous new 10,000 square ft. space called Verboten. My show is conducted in the round, I host and perform an act, it features 8 other performers (and a ridiculously wonderful kitten, Amanda) and there’s various themes for each month. NYC has such a deep talent pool that it’s a huge thrill to put these shows together. I can’t wait to see what it grows into. It’s so gorgeous. I’m also looking into singing again….but we shall see.

BSP: What’s it like performing there, as opposed to Seattle?  Does it feel different, stylistically?

Sydni: In some ways, yes. The coasts like to keep it a little naughtier, I think. NYC seems to be all about the butt (which I certainly don’t mind- makes me love my job a bit more), a little more rock n’ roll with their energy, and the shows feel different overall, but I think that’s because of the audiences and the general feel of New York. There’s BIG talent in Seattle and NYC. I truly wish I could smoosh my hands together and make an epic talent pool baby! I feel challenged here, certainly taking up a new hosting position, and I find myself feeling inspired to toe-dip back into my roots a little bit more, going back to my “neo” days. I brought back my “Fat Bottom Girls” act (first night back and I chipped a tooth onstage- that’s punk rock baby! heh) and I just had Jamie Von Stratton make my new bunny costume for my Anti-patriarchy/Playboy bunny act. They were the only two I missed, and I’m glad to have them back. I’m excited to see how I can change them to reflect my stage-craft now, but bring in some of the flavor they had before.

BSP: Are you excited to share the BHoF stage with so many Seattle folks this year?  It will be quite a reunion! And a healthy little pinch of competition, too…

Sydni: Well, I actually like competition. It teaches me a lot about myself, gives me a big look at where I am mentally while I’m onstage. I’m beyond thrilled to share the stage with Seattle people- these are my peers and I’ve been so lucky to have come up in the world with them. Incredible humans. I can’t wait to see how many more people fall in love with them- they deserve it!

Each year in June, thousands flock to Las Vegas to be part of Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend. They’ve come to see four nights of glitter-filled magic on stage in The Orleans Hotel. The Saturday night 24th Annual Tournament of Tease is the highlight of the weekend as burlesquers compete in several categories, the pièce de résistance being the “Reigning Queen of Burlesque” category. This year a number of Seattle burlesque artists are performing at BHoF and at the Saturday night tournament. BSP is getting down with these performers to ask them about being involved in this year’s BHoF.

Seattle’s Eddie Van Glam will be competing for “Best Boylesque”, along with Paris Original and Trojan Original (the fourth competitor in the “Best Boylesque” category is Mr. Gorgeous from NYC). One of the first times I saw Eddie Van Glam was at a Tempting Tarts show as a volunteer from the audience, where he then was serenaded by Jinkx Monsoon. Later in the year we took the Academy of Burlesque’s 202 class together. Since then Eddie has been involved in many productions, most recently The Naked Show, A Burlesque Affair to Remember, Thriller: A Burlesque Horror Story, Tuesday Tease, and he performs regularly at The Pink Door. I asked Eddie a few questions and about his origins in burlesque and what it’s like being involved in this year’s BHoF.

POC: What’s your performance background?

Eddie Van Glam: My background comes from two very different (but two very similar) artistic platforms: theater and pro wrestling. My love for theater performance goes back to over 25 years ago when my mom would play her favorite show tunes at breakfast every morning while I sat on my booster seat at the dinner table eating cereal. Watching soon became “not enough”; I wanted to do it too. I was 9 when I started acting in stage productions and in college I did musical theater. Around the same time I started performing, I also found pro wrestling. I admired the wrestler’s Adonis physiques & drawn to the hyper-masculine ballet they presented. They were comic book superheroes come to life. Much like trying my hand at theater, I became a wrestler 8 years ago. That journey brought me to performing burlesque 4 years ago.

POC: What was it specifically that brought you into burlesque?

EVG: I vividly remember my first account of burlesque. It was St. Patrick’s Day 2008. I went out to a variety show in Seattle with some friends. To be truthful, I had never even heard of burlesque before. Upon watching the performer, Evilyn Sin Claire, I was hooked. It was magic. After that night, I started looking for more shows to attend. I began studying it, falling for the beauty & freedom of the art form. By 2011, I had become friends with Evilyn and one day she looked at me and said, “Why don’t you do boylesque? Do you even realize your pro wrestling entrance is a burlesque act?” Stunned by the revelation, I thought about what she said. After some consideration, I decided to go for it and I enrolled in Miss Indigo Blue’s [Academy of Burlesque] Boylesque 101.

I was very nervous going into 101, I am a very shy person, and I was nervous what my classmates would think of me and my take on the question “What is Boylesque?” Traditionally, 101 students are taught the “art of the striptease.” But I wanted to do something different. Prior to my first day in class, at my day job as a hair stylist I had a client who told me she got hot watching her boyfriend put on a suit. While building my persona, I felt the best way to introduce “Eddie Van Glam” to an audience for the first time was a reverse reveal into a full tuxedo.

From the 101 in March of 2011, I soon found myself struggling. Audiences were unfamiliar with hyper-masculine males in burlesque and I suffered for it. Audiences would boo or scream obscenities at me and it hurt really bad. I had such a love for this platform to express and share myself, but audiences weren’t ready for it yet. One of my 101 classmates talked me into doing the 202 and I am glad they did. I found the spark again and haven’t stopped since.

POC: How do you feel about being a BHoF performer, and what are your feelings on the competitive aspect?

EVG: To say “I feel truly blessed,” would be an understatement. It’s an honor just to be chosen to perform (I know it sounds cliché, but it’s really true.) To me, BHoF Weekend is the pinnacle of our industry. It’s our Academy Awards, our Super Bowl & Olympics all rolled into one. It’s where you see the most innovative & talented performers. They’re game changers. I am humbled to be chosen, because it means I must be doing something right. In terms of the definition of “competition,” I feel it’s a double-edged sword. I, myself am a very competitive person. It keeps me on my toes and gives me drive to grow as a performer. I don’t use it to tear others down or allow myself to be consumed by it. I believe in healthy competition, but I also feel it can be unhealthy if you let it. This is the time for all of us to motivate one another to be the best version of ourselves. This is where we help bring our art form to the next level. Healthy competition allows that.

POC: How are you preparing? (mentally, physically, etc.)

EVG: I’m building towards a very exciting moment. I’m not doing anything different than I normally do, but I’m enjoying the journey. The pay off is getting to be on that stage in June in front of my friends, my peers, my family & the Legends who have paved the path for me to be able to perform. My goal is to give them all a performance of a lifetime.

POC: Who have been some of your burlesque heroes?

EVG: When I first started doing burlesque, I really found myself drawn to and inspired by the performers Waxie Moon (who I was privileged to be trained by,) Evilyn Sin Claire (of Sinner Saint Burlesque,) The Stage Door Johnnies (who doesn’t love them?!) & burlesque Legends Velvet Ice and Eartha Quake. They each have an amazing presence onstage and inspire me in different ways. I didn’t know men did burlesque until I saw Waxie Moon. He is such a larger than life persona that captivates me every time. His execution is done with such surgical precision, all the while maintaining that infectious smile of his. I’m also super jealous of those legs! Evilyn is a modern day, Punk Rock Janis Joplin. She’s real and raw. You can really feel what’s she’s presenting. There’s something to be said about 3 dynamically different men with different styles who come together in such harmony: The Stage Door Johnnies. I love Ray Gunn’s sensuality, Jett Adore’s playfulness and Bazuka Joe’s creativity. It’s a perfect recipe. Velvet & Eartha have inspired me in so many ways. They’ve personally encouraged me when I have had doubts about my performances and their feedback from their experience as performers is invaluable. I really treasure the relationship I have with them.

POC: Any final thoughts?

EVG: Three of the “Best Boylesque” competitors are from Seattle. Yes, I want to win, but more importantly I want that trophy to come home with one of us. Seattle has had a big contingent of winners this year (Jinkx Monsoon, Macklemore, Seattle Seahawks, & pro-wrestler Daniel Bryan.) Myself, Paris & Trojan are going to show why Seattle is a hub for male burlesque. It’s high time that a King resides here.
