The Stargazer Gown Project: helping Lily Verlaine shine at BHOF.

The Stargazer Gown, sketch by Danial Webster

Kickstarter allows anyone that’s feeling a little philanthropic to become a patron of the arts. Since its inception, tens of thousands of people have donated $1 or more to fund projects as varied as book publication, indie films, coast to coast photographic journeys, start-up underwear companies, bands seeking wheels to go on tour, or the creation of custom software that lets you design your own deconstructed little black dress. Fashion and burlesque are current Kickstarter bedfellows in a campaign launched yesterday by Seattle’s very own living, breathing work of art: Lily Verlaine.

Lily and designer Danial Webster have dreamed up the dress of all dresses for Lily’s performance at this year’s Burlesque Hall of Fame weekend, where Lily will compete for Reigning Queen of Burlesque. The dress- an incredible feat of couture and costuming- will require over 200 hours of work and heaps and heaps of materials, as one might guess.

Lily is truly one of the most unique and beloved burlesque performers in Seattle. Her imagination is limitless (as evidenced by this project, as well her yearly Burlesque Nutcracker and Through the Looking Glass: the Burlesque Alice in Wonderland); her individual acts raising the bar on burlesque as dance/performance art in a very real and rare way. I often feel that when I watch Lily perform, the atmosphere changes: the air grows thicker, more humid- the audience magnetically drawn to each reveal and every curve of her body. Perhaps it’s this chemistry that will win her the title of Reigning Queen of Burlesque. She certainly deserves it.

And YOU can give back to Lily by becoming a part of The Stargazer Gown… and pick up some personalized gratitude from Lily and Danial while you’re at it. It’s an amazing project to be a part of and there are 24 days to go.

More on this project:

The Stargazer Gown is a collaboration between choreographer Lily Verlaine and designer Danial Webster and will make its debut at the 2011 Burlesque Hall of Fame. The gown is inspired by the unabashed sensuality of the Stargazer lily itself: the dripping stamen, the dark, staining pollen, the disorganized blossom, its brazen glamour and its unapologetic palette.

Such a gift of nature supplies ample inspiration in the minds of two artists who enjoy making defiant spectacles. Combining Lily’s vivacity and retro-style glamour with Danial’s spontaneous sophistication, the two intend to create a jaw-dropping wearable work of art that continues a tradition of couture in burlesque theatre. There is perhaps no better example of this than Erté’s stunning pieces for Ziegfeld Follies.

The Stargazer Gown was conceived in the interest of blurring the line between couture and costuming, employing fine sewing techniques, painting, fabric dying, and corseting. The design is estimated to employ 200 hours of design time.

Danial has worked in Seattle as a costumer for burlesque and alternative artists on limited budgets, which translates to a compromised vision–fewer hours spent in the design and execution process and working with materials that may not be his first choice. In this project, we are hoping to provide Danial with enough of a budget to allow for creative liberty and a true expression of what this artist is capable of achieving.

The entire project will cost nearly $7,000 including design, materials, and production. The Kickstarter campaign is seeking vital patrons for t$2,000 in contributions to cover material costs alone.

Mod Carousel & Can Can Present: A Benefit to Honor the Life of Sakara Dunlap.

Celebrate the life of a beloved member of Seattle's performance community.

This Wednesday, May 11 at Can Can, friends and fellow artists will honor the life of Sakara Dunlap (Righteous Depravity), member of Mod Carousel and a beloved friend to many in Seattle’s burlesque community. Sakara passed away suddenly on April 5 at age 22, just as she was beginning to bloom as a confident, spirited performer and young woman. Her life was made rich with friends and her passion for performing in Seattle as well as in Juneau, where she graduated in 2007.

Sakara’s best friend and fellow Mod Carousel performer The Luminous Pariah has organized two benefit shows (Seattle and Juneau) in order to assist her family with funeral expenses. Luminous had this to say on Sakara’s life:

My best friend, Sakara (Righteous Depravity) was a bold, energetic, charismatic, altruistic person. Sakara’s bold laugh will forever resonate in the hearts of the many people she touched.

She was passionate about environmental subjects, which showed in her theatrical work. She was like a sponge for information. I was always in awe of the way she soaked it all in, synthesized it, and artistically put it back out. She was studying to become a licensed massage therapist. She loved to climb high things without regard to gravity. I will never forget her thunderous laugh. She was so full of joy. She was the most alive person I knew. She was all about life experiences and taking risks. She hitch-hiked back and forth across the country, and rode her bicycle from Alaska to Seattle making friends and genuine connections along the way.

That’s who she was. A genuine bright soul. She was like a second sun. Bright, cheery, and glowing.

Sinner Saint Goes to Vancouver, Randi Rascal Makes a “Training” Video…

•05/05/2011 • 1 Comment

Sinner Saint Burlesque, under the direction of my personal hero Evilyn Sin Claire, is presenting an entire program at the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival this weekend. Only six producer submissions were accepted this year, of which Sinner Saint’s Forces of Nature is one. With Evilyn’s help and the troupe’s support, the show has metamorphosed a little since its Seattle run- those of you in Vancouver can see the revamped production Friday evening at 9:30pm.

Evilyn and co-conspirator Belle Cozette will also perform “The Porcelain Promenade” in the Saturday night showcase, and will appear (briefly and violently) in Heidi Von Haught and Randi Rascal’s “Period Piece” at the cast party Sunday, hosted by Scotty the Blue Bunny. For more on the Vancouver Burlesque Fest, click HERE.

Speaking of Randi Rascal, Burlesque Seattle Press is beyond excited that she’ll be competing in this year’s Burlesque Hall of Fame “Best Debut” category. When asked how she felt about being invited to compete this year, Randi had this to say:

I was completely blown away and honored to have been invited to perform in the “Best Debut” competition. It’s absolutely the best institutional compliment that can be paid to a novice clown stripper! Although I’m usually a very competitive person, the phrase “it’s an honor just to be nominated” doesn’t even go far enough in expressing the humble, fun, and lighthearted attitude I’ve been experiencing about the competition. I just can’t wait to share my work with the community and be inspired by theirs. We’re going to have a magnificent time!

On a much less serious note, check out this hilarious “Training Montage” video put together by Randi and a few of her Seattle burlesque friends:

Nightcap returns to the Triple Door with the one and only Catherine D’Lish.

Through the Looking Glass: The Burlesque Alice in Wonderland, Lily Verlaine’s evening-length collaboration with Jasper McCann, wrapped on Saturday after a three night/six show run at the Triple Door. The cast took their bows and Lily and Jasper broke from character for a few moments, stepping towards the audience as the red curtain fell behind them. With microphone in hand, Lily Verlaine the producer had a few announcements to make.

As Miss Verlaine’s production assistant, I am more than aware of Lily’s busy month. With her acceptance into the “Reigning Queen of Burlesque” competition at the Burlesque Hall of Fame weekend in Las Vegas and the Stargazer Gown fundraising project she has tied in, as well as her Francophilic exploration with Kitten La Rue and Olivier Wevers La Danse! Le Burlesque! L’Edition Francaise! at the Triple Door May 26-28, the producer- and the performer- has quite the full plate. In addition to these larger productions, Miss Verlaine recently confirmed dates for the first 2011 installment of her late night burlesque and variety revue Nightcap.

The Emerald City is blessed with some of the finest performers in the business. Three of them will be joining Lily Verlaine on stage this Friday and Saturday for an 11pm show at the Triple Door. Having recently returned from the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender, “striptease virtuoso” Catherine D’Lish will be gracing the stage with, from what I hear, some very large props. A living legend and one of the most intoxicating ecdysiasts I have seen to date, she performs in Seattle so infrequently, it is quite the treat to have the opportunity to see her two nights in a row with such an affordable ticket.

Joining Ms. D’Lish is the one and only “gender-bending queer boylesque sensation” Miss(ter) Waxie Moon and, back from a recent tour of Europe, Seattle’s aerial pioneer Tamara the Trapeze Lady. The evening will be hosted by crooner Jasper McCann.

Better Living through Burlesque: Texas Burlesque Festival 2011

Cha Cha Velour @ Texas Burlesque Festival (POC Photo)

After photographing The New Orleans Burlesque Festival last year and having such a good time, I decided I wanted to check out other festivals across the country (and hopefully a few internationally someday). First up after New Orleans was The 4th Annual Texas Burlesque Festival in Austin. The festival had many performers from throughout Texas of course, as well as Chicago, Atlanta, California, the Pacific Northwest and more.

The festival was divided into three nights with the first devoted to burlesque newbies, hosted by Big Mama Red. The second night was legends with Tiffany Carter and Shannon Doah hosted by Dr. Annie Sprinkle; the final evening was the competition hosted by the funny and vibrant Cora Vette.

The cool thing about these festivals is meeting new performers, other burlesque enthusiasts, designers, and photographers. I had the chance to talk with Lynn Raridon, producer of this year’s Texas Burlesque Festival and proprietor of Forbidden Fruit. “My goal with the fest is to create opportunity for all caliber/experience levels of the art form,” says Lynn, “so that it can continue to thrive and flourish.” Lynn- who earned a BFA from UT- came to burlesque through the theater. “The first show I ever choreographed was local production of GYPSY! After doing my research and working on that show- you could say a fan was born in me!”

Production coordinator for the festival is Coco Lectric, crowned Queen of Burlesque at last year’s New Orleans Burlesque Festival and co-founder of The Jigglewatts Burlesque in Austin. Coco wanted to help with the festival any way she could, and Lynn was happy to have such a vibrant and knowledgeable performer as part of the proceedings. As well as performing in Austin and across the country, Coco is headmistress at The Austin Academy of Burlesque and will compete for the crown of Miss Exotic World at this year’s Burlesque Hall of Fame weekend. “Burlesque for life,” Coco tells me.

How did it come to that? She trained in ballet but found her passion in belly dance and Afro-Caribbean dance. About five years ago Coco and Jigglewatts co-founder Ruby Joule produced a “cheeky” little musical for a friend’s birthday. With a great response to the show and bursting with ideas to do more like it, a burlesque starlet was born. And a very busy one, at that.

Another treat while in Texas was seeing Sassy Delure, who left Seattle last year for Austin and settled quickly into the burlesque scene there. Initially she wasn’t quite sure how that would happen. “I had no idea there was a scene down here and when I got here I figured I would take a couple months off and figure out what was going on,” Sassy told me.

Within a few weeks of arriving, local designer Coco Coquette produced a fashion show called Cherchez la Femme! Two days before the show one of the cast was unable to perform her complicated dance routine due to illness, and Sassy filled in beautifully. She won over the crowd and the burlesque community and has become a fixture on the scene ever since. For those Seattleites who long for Sassy, don’t fret. She will return at the end of next month to perform in L’Edition Francaise! by Lily Verlaine, Kitten LaRue and Olivier Wevers (May 26-28 at The Triple Door).

Seattle starlets Minetta Lane and Roxie Moxie of Stripped Screw made their way to the festival and performed as a duo with their fiery Faustian act. I also caught up with one of the Rose City Shimmy gals from Portland, Baby Le’Strange, whose hot dog number electrified the crowd. One of my favorite acts of the weekend was Lula Hoop Guru and her tribute to Hitchcock’s “The Birds”, which won the Best Novelty/Vaudeville prize. I’ve seen burlesque hula hooping before but Lula was quite ingenious in her interpretation of the classic ’60’s movie. I was also glad to see some boylesque at TBF with newcomers Foxxy Blue Orchid and Stephan wooing the crowd nicely. It seems that boylesque is becoming more prominent at festivals across the country. Looking forward to next year’s Texas Burlesque Festival already!
