Redheads for the win.
A pair of glorious redheads top our burlesque news feed today…first off, our favorite fiery Legend – the one and only Tempest Storm – was featured today in this amusingly titled article in the UK’s Daily Mail Online. There’s some great photos, and Tempest shares memories of the people she’s met through her long and winding career as a showgirl. We can barely contain ourselves while waiting for that autobiography…
Another of our favorite redheaded showgirls just so happens to be coming to Seattle and Portland this week. New York School of Burlesque Headmistress/member of BurlyCon’s Board of Directors/author of The Burlesque Handbook/all-around champion for burlesque and for sex workers’ rights Jo “Boobs” Weldon will not only appear in Glitter and Mishief this weekend at West Hall, she’ll also be teaching two four-week courses at the Academy of Burlesque. (Not to mention she’ll be at Dr. Sketchy’s January 19, appearing with the Belltown Burlesque Revue February 8, and she’ll teach in Portland at The Analog on January 18. Jo’s a very busy lady).

Glitter & Mischief: An Alumni Invitational starring Jo “Boobs” Weldon!!
On Saturday January 18th, the Academy is so freaking excited to be hosting the amazing and magical Jo “Boob” Weldon on our stage in West Hall! This show will kick off our year of programming for 2014, and is not to be missed.
Hosted by the glitteriest and most mischievous Elsa Von Schmaltz, the lineup also features:
– Iva Handfull “2013 Queen of Kansas City Burlesque Festival”
– Bella Bijoux, Academy Teacher in Training
– Eddie Van Glam

And rumor has it that the Mayor of Seattle Burlesque, Lord Richard Longfellow, will be making a special appearance!

Hot for teacher doesn’t begin to cover it…Seattle area students will have the opportunity to learn directly from Jo as she launches two sets of classes at the Academy beginning Sunday, January 19. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing Jo speak or watching her conduct a class at BurlyCon, you’ll understand why this opportunity should not be missed. When it comes to owning your moves, commanding an audience, and directing attention exactly where she wants it…Jo is the best.

The legendary Jo Boobs of The New York School of Burlesque brings her special brand of burlesque to Seattle for a 4 week residency! She will offer 2 series classes: “Essential Burlesque” and “Making a Burlesque Act”. Both classes will use her book The Burlesque Handbook. (If you don’t have the book, you will be able to buy it for the discounted rate of $10!)
ESSENTIAL BURLESQUE
This course is comprised of 4 segments:
– Classic Moves
– Peeling and Chair Dance
– Isolations and Fan Dancing
– Striptease Expertise
This is a FABULOUS way to learn burlesque movement vocabulary and style without the pressure of creating a routine or performing!

MAKING A BURLESQUE ACT
This course has 4 segments, in which you will create a burlesque routine using her book The Burlesque Handbook. The course will include:
– Ideation: coming up with your music, act concept, etc.
– Music and Musicality
– Costuming for removal
– Workshopping your routine, and giving and receiving feedback with your classmates
Build your burlesque routine! Bring your persona to life!
Please note, this course does not include a performance.
