Portland’s Rose City School of Burlesque

Many burlesque-loving cities have a school or an ongoing roster of workshops wherein aspiring stripteuses can obtain an education in the ways of the bump n’ grind. Facets of the business such as professional networking, ethics, and production protocol are taught alongside classes on everything from character development to costume creation and from tassel twirling to perfecting a shimmy. Rather extraordinary is the willingness of modern burlesque luminaries to pass along the tips, tricks, and insights they have obtained through hard work- and many times, their own early trial and error. In 2009, Portland found itself on the list of cities boasting an academy of these erotic arts by way of the Rose City School of Burlesque.

Founded by Holly Dai, the school just turned out its fourth graduating class- its largest thus far, with eleven graduates completing the term. With an instructional team led by Miss Dai and touting the expertise of Meghan Mayhem, Tana The Tattooed Lady, and Zora Phoenix, attendees of the RCSoB have the opportunity to soak up knowledge from industry veterans and utilize it in realizing their individual performance aspirations. “People tell me that I’m responsible for all of these women doing burlesque,” says Holly. “But I’m not responsible. I just facilitate something that is already within them.” This facilitation has certainly become key in the continued growth of Portland’s burlesque scene, as the School’s most recent graduate recital helps to indicate.

The recital (on March 22 at the Bossanova Ballroom) left its sizable audience joyfully discomposed and begging for more. As the instructors filled the roles of Emcee (Zora) and Stage Kittens (Meghan and Tana), a well-deserved pride in their graduates was apparent on each of their faces throughout the performances. A few acts were particularly notable: a devilishly delightful transformation piece by Merry Poser, a dose of flirtatious ultra-sass from Babs Jamboree, hilariously innovative glove removal by Dee Dee Pepper, and a fantastic introduction to Vienna Savage, whose Statue Of Liberty act literally caused an entranced audience member to yell out “God bless America!” Without knowing that these ladies were making their stage debuts, one could easily have believed that they had been at it for months. Remarks Holly: “I’m always impressed with how quickly people that think they can’t do it pull it out and rock the entire house.” And rock the house, they did.

The Rose City School of Burlesque begins its next term on Tuesday, April 12 with a workshop from Dangerous Curves Ahead. Potential students are encouraged to sign up post haste, as spots are filling fast. More information can be found at www.rosecityschoolofburlesque.com , including information on the next recital as details are finalized.

The Atomic Bombshells

More details have surfaced for the upcoming (and first ever) open audition to be the newest member of supertroupe The Atomic Bombshells. These ladies- as well as host Jasper McCann- have made a huge contribution in fanning the flames of burlesque’s sparkling presence in Seattle as well as raising the bar for professional burlesque nationwide. Their shows are polished to perfection, their dance moves divine, and they thrill time after time with grand scale productions such as 2010’s fantastic Lost in Space. The Atomic Bombshells have been the inspiration for many a performer, and in doing so have launched numerous fledgling ecdysiast careers from coast to coast. If you think you have what it takes to be a part of some big time burlesque, this is a phenomenal opportunity to work with some of the best in the business.

Here’s the fine print:

WHEN: Sunday, April 10 • 3:00pm – 6:00pm
WHERE: Tashiro Kaplan Artist Lofts (Pioneer Square), 115 Prefontaine Pl. S., Seattle, WA

The Atomic Bombshells are holding their FIRST EVER OPEN AUDITION for the newest addition to their internationally celebrated Burlesque supertroupe! Critically acclaimed in local, national, and international press, The Atomic Bombshells have become one of the most recognized and accomplished burlesque troupes around. In addition to consistently selling out venues such as The Triple Door in Seattle, the Bombshells have toured the U.S., Portugal, China, and have a yearly summer residency in Provincetown.

Prerequisites:

Girls, boys, everything in-between are welcome, but interested applicants MUST have some previous dance experience and be able to learn choreography. Previous burlesque experience welcomed but not necessary.

*Kitten LaRue is the Artistic Director/Producer of The Atomic Bombshells, so if chosen as a troupe member, you must be comfortable with being directed and styled. Every troupe member’s input is welcome and valued, but final decisions about every detail come down to one director.

*As being an Atomic Bombshell involves a certain amount of time, energy, and dedication, with definite rewards for said dedication, if chosen as the new member, we require that the Bombshells will be the only TROUPE that you are a member of. Solo and other show projects are fine.

Audition:

Please bring a headshot (doesn’t have to be professional, just something to recognize you with) and a performer bio. The audition will be composed of 2 parts:

*In part one, everyone will learn a few 8 counts from the Bombshells rep, and be divided into groups to perform it.
*In part two, those who have something to show us (a short dance, striptease, extra skill or talent, whatever you want!) will do that one at a time. This is not required but encouraged. Please bring music on CD.

PLEASE RSVP TO THIS AUDITION by emailing atomicbombshellsburlesque@gmail.com

Best of luck to all that try out!

Moisture Festival Burlesque

Two ladies and the little toilets that could. (RJB Photo)

With the advent of spring comes the annual Moisture Festival, showcasing an oddball array of live Comedy/Varietè infused with burlesque. The adult-oriented Libertease Burlesque shows are held in the round at ACT Theatre- the perfect way to see Evilyn Sin Claire and Belle Cozette’s infamous “Porcelain Promenade” number (which incidentally, will be performed at the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival this year). If you haven’t seen the act, it features two rhinestone-encrusted toilets and two super vixens armed with bath tissue and aerosol spray.

Each year Seattle burlesque’s NYC-by-way-of-Baltimore extended family Trixie Little & the Evil Hate Monkey return for the Moisture Festival, performing March 31-April 2 for five shows. Winners of the 2006 Exotic World Best Burlesque Duo trophy, Trixie and Monkey have both placed separately since that time.

“Once you win a category, they don’t really let you back in again so we took the opportunity to develop our solo chops and have been competing solo the past few years. I placed 2nd runner up and Most Innovative in 2008 with my Mermaid act and Monkey actually brought home the Best Boylesque title in 2010!” she explained to BSP last summer. Read the rest of BSP’s interview with Trixie HERE, and check out this clip of The Evil Hate Monkey’s winning “Prima Primate” act from BHOF 2010:

In other news, the BHOF 2011 competitors are slowing beginning to surface…several have been accepted from Portland and Seattle already…to be continued! Best of luck to all.

Stripped Screw’s Love:Sick 2011

Here’s some of the more bizarre highlights from the conclusion of Love:Sick by Stripped Screw Burlesque, as captured by photographer Chris Blakeley:

Wiggy Stardust's balloon dance with an estrogen twist.

A food fetish run amok: Peanut Butter, Jelly, & Banana Sandwich

Voodoo wild child: Roxie Moxie

My personal pick for Best In Show? “Why Can’t a Woman Be More Like a Man?” (made famous by Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady) has never seen a more hilarious treatment than the exasperated delivery by Violet Tendencies of Stripped Screw Burlesque. She never fails to slay me with her comic instincts.

Violet Tendencies kills me every time.
